Book Lord of the Rings Tickets
I wasn’t a huge Tolkien fan prior to the film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but I had read Tolkien’s original 1000 plus narrative and loved the fantasy of Middle Earth. Peter Jackson’s adaptations captivated me further; the fantastical characters are alive and kicking and the horror of Sauron is breathing down your neck.
It was with some scepticism then that I went to Theatre Royal Drury Lane to see Matthew Warchus’s musical adaptation of Lord of the Rings. My main concern was how to condense Tolkien’s original story into 3 hours of drama? I walked into the theatre without any real expectations then and was rather pleasantly surprised. It is not a faithful representation, it never could be. But the journey of Frodo and companions is brought to life in the London show much the same as in Jackson’s films.
Going to see Lord of the Rings is a dramatic experience and you don’t even have to be a fan of the original Tolkien material. The only people who might not enjoy the spectacle are loyal Tolkien followers and it quite likely they would not step foot over the Drury Lane threshold.
This London musical was produced on a budget of some £12 million, making it the most expensive and hi-tech theatre production ever staged in West End theatre. There are some truly amazing special effects, not least of Shelob the giant spider. You are frequently carried away on the mystical, fantastical journey with the ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ and the boundaries between stage and audience are often completely eroded. So enjoy the gruesome Orcs and the cute Hobbits that trawl the aisles and buy theatre tickets for this show. You will enjoy your journey from the tranquillity of the Shire to the horrors of Mordor where Frodo and Sam face the ultimate challenge of destroying the ring.
