X Files star back in West End

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Gillian Anderson is no stranger to appearing on stage in the West End. She previously appeared at the Comedy Theatre in 2002 in What The Night Is For and then again in 2004 at the Royal Court in The Sweetest Thing in Baseball. Gillian is most famous for the X Files, the American cult series that ran for an unbelievable nine seasons plus two spin off movies (the second of which is scheduled for July 2008 release).

Now Mark Anderson is bringing Ibsen’s A Doll’s House back to the West End. It will run at the Donmar Warehouse from Spring 2009. Tickets will be available towards the end of summer 2008. It will be a challenging role for Anderson as typically, Ibsen’s plays are not light entertainment; his characters are mouthpieces exposing social injustices and issues. She will play the female lead, Nora who is demeaned by her dominant husband and she eventually faces the dilemma of leaving him and her life and children behind her.

Lovers of London theatre should watch out for ticket release for this one as Gillian’s charisma on stage is captivating and in such a dramatic play as this, expect award nominations next year.

The 39 Steps Theatre Review

The 39 Steps tickets at the Criterion Theatre

VIEW SEATS / BOOK

The 39 Steps is unusual in that it hasn’t got anyone famous in it and it is in a fairly small theatre. On top of that it is a play not a musical and yet, it is a marvellous play and audiences are loving it.

The original book was by John Buchan in 1914 and then in1935 it was translated into film by none other than Alfred Hitchcock. He introduced a female character so our main protagonist had a love interest and of course, it was a huge success.

Patrick Barlow’s play 39 Steps totally captures the fun of the original movie and the result is a rollicking good escapade. Nothing is left out, including the memorable scene of the chase on the ‘Flying Scotsman’ and the ‘Fourth Bridge’ escape and even the finale in the London Palladium. The 39 Steps is pure unadulterated fun and Concierge Desk highly recommend you book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

Adding to the entertainment of Barlow’s adaptation is the complication that there are only four actors playing 150 or so characters and it is superbly done with great timing. The male lead, a spiffing chap called Richard Hannay has the enduring quality of upper class English reserve that never falters. Even in the face of some hairy adventures (including the chase across the top of a moving train), he maintains that level of decorum and sophistication in a parody of the Englishness of the time, complete with pencil moustache and unmoveable hair!

In addition to the very best tickets, Concierge Desk can secure you cheap 39 Steps tickets @ just £25.00 (A SAVING OF £17.50 FROM FACE VALUE) and theatre/meal packages at Galileo’s or the Criterion Restaurant.
