West Side Story Theatre Review

West Side Story tickets

UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE NO LONGER SELLING TICKETS FOR THIS PRODUCTION AS IT IS FULLY SOLD OUT

West Side Story has become one of the most endearing musicals of our time. It is based upon Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; a love story within a landscape of gang rivalry. Highly emotionally, beautifully choreographed and an amazing soundtrack. West Side Story is perfect this summer for a family trip to the theatre. The grown ups will remember the songs and the youngsters can discover the depth of the story and enjoy the spectacle of singing and dancing.

The book has been written by Arthur Laurents and is set on Upper Manhattan’s West Side in the 1950’s. The two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks face the biggest challenge of all, when Tony, the leader of the Jets falls madly in love with Maria, the sister of Peurto Rican gang leader of the Sharks. The two gangs battling for control of the neighbourhood are plunged further into cultural division and violent resolution when the secret love of Tony and Maria is discovered. There is drama and tragedy in this highly charged singing and dancing epic that first wowed us over 50 years ago. The passing of time has not lessened the power of the story but it helps to portray such a well loved musical when the young cast are superb, the scenery stunning and the directing, by Joey McKneely, spot on.

The immense choreography is by the legendary Jerome Robbins and there is simply nothing like the dancing anywhere else in the West End. The score is by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein and includes such memorable hits as Maria, Tonight, America and Jet Song. Stephen Sondheim has won a record breaking 7 Tony Awards in his long career. The original movie version of West Side Story starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris and won an incredible 10 Academy Awards.

The London theatre adapatation of West Side Story at Sadler’s Wells Theatre is highly recommended by Concierge Desk and we can guarantee fantastic tickets for this top West End show. Book now and avoid disappointment.

  1. missy anon Says:

West Side Story is a banal story that originally was entitled East Side Story about an Irish boy who falls in love with a Jewish girl. The producers figured it was not marketable. When they found out about Chicano gangs in Los Angeles and gang violence in the local LA newspaper they changed the story.

Stories like these should be banned. NYC is more than 50% latino but these stories denigrate and condescend towards hispanic history. In a world with political correctness in speach and a black president, why do we let abysmal stories like this continue. There is no truth to this story. There never was gang violence like this. However, it has been used as a rationale to label hispanics, stereotyping and pigeonholing them. It is incredible that stories like this, not authored by hispanics and full or racism are allowed to continue to play on Broadway. It is fake and a lie and should be treated as such. The time to stop these plays is now. Boycott this show and signal to the producers that this type of fare should not be tolerated. http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC39folder/westSideStory.html
