Is there a doctor in the house?

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The theatre experience can be very dramatic and satisfying, but you wouldn’t expect the audience to start passing out at the performances. However that’s exactly what has been happening at London’s National Theatre. Audience members have been passing out in shock at the graphic nature of the acting in the play ‘Her Naked Skin’.

The play is about the suffragettes and is set in London nearly 100 years ago. It feature hard hitting topics about women’s rights and even shows a scene where a woman is force fed through her nose.

As a result of the affects on audience members, medical staff are now on standby during the performances to cater to those who find the show a little bit too much to handle.

The play, by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, has been getting rave reviews for its acting performances.

According to the show’s director, Nicholas Hytner:

People in the audience have fainted or collapsed every night.

LA PAGE AUX FOLLES TICKETS – LIVE AVAILABILITY

The Playhouse theatre is to receive the musical La Cage Aux Folles in October. The musical was first shown at the Menier Chocolate Factory, but will open at the Playhouse theatre on October 20th.

Douglas Hodge takes the lead as Albin, the cross dressing cabaret artist.

The musical is a comedy that follows the lives of Georges, the owners of the cabaret club ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ and his lover, and star drag performer, Albin. The pair have to change their lifestyle when Georges’s son gets engaged to a girl whose father is a right wing politician.

The play debuted on Broadway back in 1983 and was performed 1,761 times, winning a staggering six Tony awards. One of the most famous musical numbers from the show, ‘I Am What I Am’ has been recorded by such established artists as Shirley Bassey and Gloria Gaynor.

There’s a special treat in store for fans of the show who are over the age of eighteen. When it opens at the Playhouse theatre, adult fans will be able to sit in the front row in what has been deemed as ‘cabaret seating’, to experience the real feel of the cabaret.

La Cage Aux Folles will run at the Playhouse theatre from October 20th, ending on January 10th 2009.

I am delighted that the Donmar’s production of Piaf is transferring to the West End. We are enormously proud of it and particularly pleased that all the people who were unable to see it at the Donmar will now have an opportunity to catch it in its limited run at the Vaudeville theatre.
