Will the real Billy Elliot please stand up?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Billy Elliot is about to receive a new Billy, well two actually. Tom Holland and Tanner Pflueger and fill the shoes of the child ballet star when they take over in the lead in September.

Tom Holland is just twelve years old and from Kingston-upon-Thames, whereas thirteen year old Tanner Pflueger is from Norfolk, Nebraska in the USA. The two boys will join the current line-up of Billys, which include Layton Williams, Joshua Fedrick and Fox Jackson-Keen.

Billy Elliot the musical has been running since May 2005 at the Victoria Palace theatre.

Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the movie of the same name, and tells the story of a young boy who takes to ballet instead of football in a tough northern mining community during the nineteen eighties.

The writer and director of the film were involved in the creation of the musical, and they were joined by the singer/songwriter Elton John. Billy Elliot the Musical has been extremely successful since its debut in London’s West End, winning four Laurence Olivier Awards in 2006.

It is believed that a much larger change of cast will take place on Billy Elliot the Musical later this year.

LA CLIQUE TICKETS – LIVE AVAIALBILITY

London theatre fans are in for a treat this autumn as La Clique comes to the West End when it opens, for the first time in London, at the Hippodrome.

La Clique has performed all across the world from New York to Sydney, and is described by itself as:

Melange of cabaret, new burlesque, circus sideshow and contemporary variety, a sexy, funny and dangerous experience.

La Clique is a mixture of theatre, circus and cabaret as it combines the weird and wacky, such as Captain Frodo, a bendy Norwegian, and Yulia Pikhtina, a hula hoop expert. The show also features a sword swallower named Miss Behave, who likes to dress in PVC outfits.

The Hippodrome has an illustrious past as part of London’s West Theatre history, but has become a private venue in recent times. With the arrival of La Clique, the Hippodrome will be reliving some of those past successes.

In its past, performers such as the famed Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland once sang on its stage, and the brilliant escapologist Harry Houdini performed his magic there.

You can see La Clique in London’s Hippodrome, opening from October 10th.

Not such a brief encounter after all

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Brief Encounter isn’t going to be quite as brief as it was first thought, as it’s been extended until Sunday November 16th at the Cinema Haymarket. Then in February 2009 the show will go on a UK wide tour.

David Pugh, producer of the theatre show, stated he was:

…delighted and amazed at the astounding success of the Kneehigh production of Brief Encounter. It was a daunting and some people said plain silly idea to adapt one of London’s oldest cinemas back into a theatre, but it has proved to be a most inspired and exciting achievement. What started as a 12-week run has been extended and extended, which means the Kneehigh Theatre Company will have played over 350 performances, and they are now due a well-earned rest before the UK tour opens on 13 February 2009 at the Royal Theatre, Northampton.

Brief Encounter opened on February 17th this year and promised to bring back some of that ‘silver screen’ magic from the golden age of Hollywood, right to the theatre stage.

Brief Encounter is directed by Emma Rice and blends the 1945 classic movie with the play ‘Still Life’. Constantly switching between theatre play and movie the play keeps the audience on edge.

If you haven’t seen Brief Encounter yet you now have until November 16th to purchase your theatre tickets and go along to the Cinema Haymarket.
