Restaurant Review
In the heart of Soho, L’escargot is probably one of the area’s most fashionable and well established French restaurants. It is a contemporary venue offering an extensive variety of French influenced cuisine. The original building was owned by the Duke of Portland and dates back to 1741 when Soho was all country and very famous for its hunting.
The restaurant was opened in 1927 by M George Gaudin and became the first British restaurant to serve snails after he conceived the idea of farming his own snails in the Basement! A lovingly restored bust of Monsieur Gaudin riding a snail is proudly displayed above the restaurant.
L’escargot was completely refurbished in 1998 and the now displays some amazing works of art including some by Miro, Chagall, Warhol, Hockney, Leger and Matisse and a fascinating selection of Picasso sketches and ceramics.
Marco Pierre White is now responsible for upholding the standards of this restaurant and with the focus on food and not an unnecessary stuffy style, it doesn’t disappoint. For pre theatre goers, even the set menu at this restaurant is of a very high standard and there is no attempt at scrimping on quantity. The ambience is lively and relaxed and the waiting staff efficient and friendly.
