Goold Has The Midas Touch
One director, whose name seems to guarantee sales of theatre tickets, is Rupert Goold.
He will soon be directing the new production of ‘Oliver’ in the West End, which includes the winners of the BBC reality show, ‘I’d Do Anything’. Before that though, his production of ‘Six Characters in Search of An Author’ by the Italian dramatist, Luigi Pirandello opens at the Gielgud theatre.
This play was originally produced for the Chichester Festival this summer. It stars Ian Mcdiarmid, who started off as a classical actor starring in ‘Hamlet’, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘King Lear’. He is now, surely, best known for playing the emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars movies.
This forms an interesting parallel with Rupert Goold’s production of ‘Macbeth’ last year which was originally staged for the Chichester Festival and then transferred to the Gielgud. It starred Patrick Stewart, another classically trained actor, who is now best known for his roles as Jean-Luc Picard in ‘Star Trek The Next Generation’ and Professor Charles Xavier founder of the superhero team (and money-spinning movie franchise), the X-Men.
Goold’s ‘Macbeth’ has gone on to New York where it is the toast of Broadway. Can he do the same thing a second time with ‘Six Characters?’ Only time will tell.
