Show Overview
War Horse is about Joey a horse, who is sent to form part of the cavalry of World War I. His young owner Albert, cannot bear to be parted from his beloved horse and so enlists, despite being only sixteen. His aim is to locate his horse and bring him home so sentimentality is quite a theme in this play, based on the novel by children’s laureate (2003-05) Michael Morpurgo.
With a minimalist set, the focus is well and truly on the equine beasts that are life sized puppets controlled by the Handspring Puppet Company. The effect of the horses is truly captivating and with their lifelike movements and sounds, the audience are able to forget they are human controlled puppets.
The horrors of the Great War have been absorbed into modern culture, with famous poems by Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, we have long since been exposed to the unthinkable conditions for front line soldiers and the astonishing loss of life. War Horse reminds us that animals were part of the front line too.
It is a heart warming play that explores the beautiful relationship between man and animal, made all the more sacred amidst the helplessness of war.
The puppetry is amazing and with truthful performances and very clever lighting, War Horse is a thought provoking piece and worthy of being set on the Olivier stage.
