James McAvoy Set For West End

THREE DAYS OF RAIN TICKETS – LIVE AVAILABILITY

James McAvoy has had a fantastic career already and he’s only 29. He just seems to go from strength to strength. His television highlights include one of the leads in the first series of ‘Shameless’, and the Steven Spielberg produced ‘Band of Brothers’.

His films include ‘Starter For Ten’, ‘The Last King of Scotland’, ‘Atonement’ and ‘Wanted’.  If that wasn’t enough for anyone, he’s also married to the gorgeous Anne-Marie Duff, and he’s now set for the West End.
He will star alongside ex Eastenders favourite, Nigel Harman, in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s play ‘Three Days of Rain’. It will play at the Apollo Theatre from February 10th 2009 following previews which commence on January 30th.

The play’s original production in the UK was at the Donmar Warehouse in 1999 when it starred Colin Firth, David Morrissey and Elizabeth McGovern.

The play tells the story of  Walker, his sister Nan, and their friend Pip, who meet in 1995 to divide the legacy of their late fathers, who were business partners The three of them try to work out what had gone on between their fathers, and the women in their lives, decades before. The story then shifts to that earlier time, with the same three actors portraying members of the previous generation.

The london show will be directed by Jamie Lloyd.

Plaudits for Oedipus

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Oedipus which runs at the National Theatre until January 4th, 2009 has been attracting excellent reviews. It is directed by Jonathan Kent and stars Ralph Fiennes, Alan Howard and Clare Higgins.

Michael Coveney from Whatsonstage.com gave it four stars and said

“This is one of the best performances of a Greek tragedy I have ever seen…. the 75 minutes of Jonathan Kent’s production are quite something … The play unravels with the gripping fervour of a courtroom drama, Clare Higgins a distraught and blasted Jocasta, Malcolm Storry a sonorous messenger from Corinth, and Alfred Burke the old shepherd who saved the abandoned princeling on the mountainside. Fiennes is superb throughout – enigmatic, tense, compelling – and particularly good at expressing his grasp of unwelcome news in the embrace of the chorus.“

Michael Billington in the Guardian gave four stars and commented

“McGuinness’ translation admirably brings out the play’s tragic trajectory … Fiennes is also the right actor to execute this interpretation. He radiates an instinctive hauteur which underscores Oedipus’ purblind pride … . Jasper Britton deftly captures Creon’s transition from condemned truth-teller to heartless power-seeker. And Clare Higgins as Jocasta, whose relationship with Oedipus is overtly sexual, has a great moment when she realises the terrible truth and her face darkens like a city suddenly deprived of illumination.”

Benedict Nightingale in The Times also awarded four stars:

“Maybe the revival is more awesome than moving, but maybe that’s what the tale of the self-destruction of a well-meaning but flawed tyrant should be. It’s also visually impressive, despite boasting no decor but one mighty bronze door, some fleetingly glimpsed trees, and, weirdly, a long trestle table round which gather 14 men who wear dark suits but no ties and themselves vaguely resemble bankers on their uppers. But this chorus doesn’t just chatter or moan. Its dismay, fear, terror rises into chant and, at the end, into a mini-opera of horror and suffering.”

This is definitely a must see london show.

Time You Caught Crabs

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

One of the big critical successes at this year’s Edinburgh Festival was ‘I Caught Crabs in Walberswick’. It was co- produced by Eastern Angles, who last year enjoyed similar success with ‘Truckstop’ directed by one of the country’s leading young directors, Christopher Rolls.

This year’s production tells the story of teenagers Fitz and Wheeler and the scrapes they get into when they fall for Dani, who is not only the fittest girl on the beach, but also one of the most troubled.

The show has a fantastic cast of five including Aarony Foy, Harry Hepple and Gemma Soul as the teenagers. The stars of the show however are Rosie Thompson and Andrew Barron, who play the parents and other assorted characters.

Rosie played Samantha Burrell in ‘Family Affairs’ and has appeared in many television shows including ‘A Touch of Frost’ and ‘Judge John Deed’. Her theatre work includes time at the National Theatre.

Andrew is an accomplished musician and has performed his own one man show, ‘Up the Gary’ in which he played a Gary Glitter impersonator to great acclaim. He recently played Mark Dixie, for a forthcoming Crimewatch special on the Sally Ann Bowman case.

The show is directed by Lucy Kerbel, and is at the Bush Theatre  from 11 November to 6 December.  If you fancy a funny, touching evening in the theatre, this is the london show for you.

Show Overview

The La Clique play has been a hugely popular show at the Edinburgh Fringe in the past couple of years and has travelled all over the world, wowing audiences in New York, Australia, Ireland and Canada.

Proving a sell out in London earlier in the year at the Hippodrome, and winner of the 2009 Olivier Award for ‘Best Entertainment’, La Clique is in the West End again!

La Clique is an eclectic mix of Burlesque, cabaret and sideshow with some amazing performers and dancers. The troupe includes the beautiful Spanish stripper Ursula Martinez, London’s Fetish Queen Miss Behave and the fabulous Cabaret Decadanse which alone makes the show worthwhile. The magical puppeteer dancers perform their sensuous act with grace and humour.

Germany’s David O’Mer truly gives the ladies something to enjoy with his bathtub routine which is very graceful and visually exciting. Not so sensuous but equally astonishing is Captain Frodo. His amazing and funny contortionist act has been on the Graham Norton show and Yulia Pikhtina whose hoola hoop act is stunning with some amazing acrobatic feats; at one point spinning a hoop on each limb!

La Clique is top end entertainment and thoroughly recommended by Concierge Desk.

New Year at the Old Vic

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The Old Vic is currently enjoying success with the Norman Conquests by Alan Ayckbourn and its planning to keep the special conversion to a theatre in the round for its next two productions in the New Year.
Kevin Spacey, the theatre’s Artistic Director returns to directing for the first time since the opening show of his reign, ‘Cloaca’ in 2004.

Running from the 22 January to 21 February, ‘Complicit’ by Joe Sutton is a contemporary political play about Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ben Kritzer, who finds himself hauled in front of a Supreme Court Special Prosecutor.

Following on from that production, opening on 5 March and scheduled to run until 9 May is a revival of Brian Friel’s ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’. The play is set in Donegal in the 1930s and tells the story of the five Mundy sisters. The cast includes Niamh Cusack, Andrea Corr, Susan Lynch and Michelle Fairley. It will be directed by Anna Mackmin.

After that, director Sam Mendes’ Bridge Project productions of The Winter’s Tale and Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, performed by an Anglo-American company led by Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack and Hollywood star Ethan Hawke take over.

It looks like there will be even more theatre tickets to add to your Christmas present list.
