Come Dancing

Well, we all know that Mamma Mia tickets are like gold dust. If anything, the release of the cinema version has had a beneficial effect on sales of tickets for the show.

The interaction between shows and the films they spawn (or vice versa) is an interesting one. A particularly noticeable example of this was Mel Brooks’ film, ‘The Producers’ which was a comedy film which, incidentally, included extracts from a spoof musical. This was adapted into a stage musical. There was then a film made of the stage version. Mr Brooks could hardly be happier!

Perhaps the other major development in musical theatre over the last few years is that of a show built around the songs of a particular artiste. Mamma Mia ticks this box as well, and is currently joined in the best selling West End shows by ‘Jersey Boys’ featuring the hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and ‘We Will Rock You’ featuring the hits of Queen.

‘Our House’, the Madness musical is being revived, and the latest show to mine this particular seam of gold is ‘Come Dancing’, a musical by Ray Davies of the Kinks.

However, this show is slightly different in that Davies only uses three songs from his extensive back catalogue including the title track and one of the Kinks’ biggest hits, ‘Tired of Waiting For You’.
