Sister Act is a Musical and comedy

Show Overview

‘Sister Act’ is about Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a murder. The police put her on a witness protection programme and their place of safety for her is a convent. In this alien environment, disco diva Deloris, influences her fellow ‘sisters’ with her passion for music but alienates her Mother Superior. In this uneasy calm, Deloris turns her attention to the convent’s choir that is less from heavenly. She inspires the singers and teaches them how to find their true voice.

As the choir grows in confidence and the neighbourhood grows in faith, the gangsters soon discover where Deloris is hiding. With time running out, she finds herself protected by the sisterhood of the convent, including the Mother Superior, who ultimately learns to appreciate what Deloris has done for the convent and for the church in general.

This is escapism at its best; dancing and singing nuns and a motley crew of ‘baddies’. It is based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Golderberg. ‘Sister Act’ is pure family entertainment, with terrific toe tapping, uplifting music. The score is by eight time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken who has worked on numerous Disney scores, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Enchanted.

Sister Act promises to be huge…

Alex – the Play of the Comic Strip

ALEX TICKETS – LIVE AVAILABILITY

It’s quite commonplace to see plays adapted from other media, whether we are talking films turned into plays or even a pop artist’s back catalogue turned into a top London show. However, it is rare for a newspaper comic strip to be adapted into a stage show and even rarer for it to be a hit.

One has to be careful how one reads the strap line for ‘Alex’ which says “He’s a wit. He’s a banker. He’s a wit of a banker.” The play has already had a run in London. It then went on an extensive international tour, and it has now returned to the capital and plays at the Leicester Square Theatre until the 20th December.

The Sunday Times described it as “blissfully funny”, and Time Out said it is “flawless comedy”. It is effectively a one man show with Robert Bathurst playing Alex and interacting with cartoon characters. It is a show which relies on a fantastic stage management team.

The producers describe it as:

“The show that lifted the lid on the city before the credit crunch began.”

It includes all the regular characters from the comic strips including the inept Clive, irritating boss Rupert and long-suffering wife Penny.

Fiona Shaw Turns Director

Fiona Shaw

Fiona Shaw

Fiona Shaw is only 50 years old. This may come as a surprise to many as she seems to have been gracing the West End stage and our TV screens for so many years. She is from County Cork in Ireland and was awarded an honorary CBE in 2001.

Some of her most famous stage roles are Madame de Volanges in ‘Les Liasions Dangereuses’, Winnie in Beckett’s ‘Happy Days’, and the title roles in ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’, ‘Hedda Gabler’, ‘The Good Person of Sechuan’ and ‘Electra’. She also won praise for her one woman version of ‘The Waste Land’ performed in New York in 1996.

Her film work includes ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Persuasion’, My Left Foot’, and Gormenghast’. The role she is probably best known for his Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter films.

Now, she is to direct a London show. She will direct the English National Opera’s new production of ‘Riders to the Sea’ by the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. It will form the centrepiece of the company’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The production stars Leigh Melrose and Patricia Bardon and is designed by Dorothy Cross and Tom Pye.
Other forthcoming productions from the company include ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘La Boheme’.

With the support of Sony BMG, ‘Thriller’ has been a national success on its’ recent UK tour and has earned standing ovations across Europe.

In addition to some of the King of Pop’s greatest hits, this musical is a visual extravaganza too with fabulous multi media effects and amazing choreography.

Michael Jackson’s career has spanned 40 years and during that time he has sold 750 million records; ‘Thriller’ being the best ever selling album of all time. His glittering career is condensed into over 2 hours of back to back Jackson hits including ‘I’ll Be There’, ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘Rock With You’, ‘She’s Out Of My Life’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Earth Song’ and ‘Thriller’.
