Show Overview
Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’ exploded on to the London stage over 50 years ago and it is arguably one of the most important texts of the twentieth century. The play centres on the surreal and with Beckett’s pathos, humour and poetry, the text has been frequently studied over the years with importance attached to the imagery of the play and the themes of humanity, exploitation, dependency and compassion.
‘Waiting for Godot’ is about two tramps, Vladimir and Estragon and the action of the play is exactly as the title of the play indicates; they are waiting for Godot. This mysterious character never materialises and we never learn anything about him. All the action is set against an insignificant background on a country road where the two, apparently educated, but homeless men meet. Rather than ever meeting Godot, Vladimir and Estragon encounter a bizarre couple; despot Pozzo and his ‘luckless’ servant Lucky who is led on stage with a rope around his neck.
The action is limited to dialogue between both sets of characters. There is story telling, the odd joke, and discussion about the problems within humanity but there is no other action. A boy comes on stage at the end of both acts to highlight the continuing absence of Godot but that’s it.
Traditionally this play has been for the serious theatre goer as it inspires serious reflection. However, it is now so familiar and so funny in parts that it can be enjoyed on another, lighter level.
In the lead roles are two of theatres best loved performers, Patrick Stewart as Vladimir and Sir Ian McKellen as Estragon. ‘Waiting for Godot’ cannot fail to be a huge hit for summer of 2009.
