The Bizarre World of The Tiger Lilies
‘A unique mix of falsetto crooning, strange gypsy music, cabaret from hell and deranged black comedy’ and ‘The criminal castrati and his accordion driven anarchic Brechtian street opera’ are just two of the descriptions you will find of the Tiger Lilies on their own web site. If you’re thinking that when a group struggles to describe itself then nobody else is likely to be able to do them justice, you make a very fair point.
Lets’ start with the basics; they’re a three man band, based in London and formed in 1989 that already have over 20 albums to their credit. They were even nominated for a Grammy award 2003 for their album ‘The Gorey End’; collaborating with classical musicians the Kronos Quartet.
Their shows are far more than concerts though. Although it could be said each one is complete in its theatricality, attempting to describe the way it flits and flirts with the normal boundaries of theatre is incredibly difficult.
Their last show’ The Seven Deadly Sins’ included a song for each sin but also slapstick comedy, a burlesque dance, and even a Punch and Judy show.
Catch their next London show, ‘Sinderella’ which will be at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank leading up to Christmas.
