Derren Brown – Enigma is a unique combination of magic, illusion and psychology

Show Overview

Derren Brown has amazed and shocked and baffled audiences for several years now. He gained such widespread popularity for the ‘never before’ live game of Russian Roulette on our television screens. In 2006, he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment for ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’.

His enigmatic style and unique approach to mind manipulation has meant he is one of our most popular magical entrepreneurs. His can pull off seemingly impossible feats and can perform magic tricks with a panache and personality that gives his shows an extra dimension. It is something than more than just magic and suggestion; Derren Brown is a true entertainer.

‘Enigma’ is both shocking and hilarious and Derren Brown is at his best as he plays psychological games with audience members.

Controversial Play to Open

Monday, March 30th, 2009

In 1993, two ten year old boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, murdered the two year old Jamie Bulger. It might seem one of those subjects, which even now, is too horrific and fraught with dangers to contemplate turning into theatre. However, the Swedish playwright, Niklas Radstrom, wrote a play called ‘Monsters’.

Now that play has been translated by Gabriella Berggren and it will receive its UK premiere at the Arcola Theatre. It will be directed by Christopher Haydon, who recently directed ‘A Number’ at Salisbury Playhouse.

The play is described as “four actors deconstruct what happened that February in a poignant theatrical experience, swapping and sharing roles to create a different performance every night.” It will run from the 6th of May until the 30th May.

Also coming to the Arcola is a success from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which now becomes a london show, ‘Lie of the Land’. The play was written by Torben Betts and is directed by Adam Barnard. The cast is Christopher Harper and Emily Bowker. They take over from Neal Barry and Nia Gwynne who played the roles in Edinburgh.

It plays from the 6th of April until the 2nd of May.

War Horse

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

The National Theatre continues to be an enormous success story under the guidance of its inspirational and commercially astute Artistic Director, Nicholas Hytner. The team of associate directors such as Howard Davies, Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris consistently produce not only satisfying and vibrant cutting edge theatre but also huge box office successes.

Current hits in the South Bank’s three theatre’s include ‘Dido, Queen of Carthage’ the rarely performed Elizabethan epic by Christopher Marlowe, ‘Mrs Affleck’ an update of a classic Ibsen, a new play originally premiered in the North East ‘The Pitman Painters’, an adaptation of an award winning Russian film ‘Burnt by the Sun’, and the controversial ‘England People Very Nice’.

A tradition of hits shows transferring to the West End and Broadway has been built. Stephen Daldry’s anti Thatcherite take on Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ continues to delight audiences up and down the country. Last year ‘The History Boys’ played in the West End whilst ‘The Seafarer’ was on Broadway.

The latest show to demonstrate the winning National Theatre formula is ‘The War Horse’ an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel which will play at the New London Theatre from the 28th of March. In a record breaking year for the sale of theatre tickets, it is never too early to book.

The Latitude Festival

Friday, March 27th, 2009

The Latitude Festival is now in its fourth year. It is a mixed art form festival on the Suffolk coast and will run this year from the 16th until the 19th of July.

This year’s line-up will include the Royal Opera House’s festival debut and a musical, ‘Been So Long’ presented by the English Touring Theatre. Other theatre companies involved include the Bush Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Last year, the festival’s theatre programme was awarded the Stage Award for Special Achievement in Regional Theatre. The sites used last year included a theatre tent which held 600 people. This year’s event will feature approximately fifty theatre and performance productions.

‘Been So Long’ is a musical adaptation of Che Walker’s 1998 play of the same name. The music is by actor and composer Arthur Darvill. Arthur’s acting credits include the BBC’s recent production of ‘Little Dorrit’ and ‘Terre Haute’ which was produced by Nabokov and staged at the Trafalgar Studios. ‘Been So Long’ will start as a london show when it plays at the Young Vic before the Latitude Festival. It will then go to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it will play at the Traverse Theatre.

Stop Messing About is a Comedy

Show Overview

This is a hilarious and nostalgic look back to a time when comedy was about bedroom humour and innuendo. You won’t get swearing and crudity when you come to see ‘Stop Messing About’. Instead, a warming, funny and delightful production that takes you back in time.

‘Stop Messing About’ is set during a live BBC recording with the biggest icon of the ‘Carry On’ movies, Kenneth Williams. In the hugely funny recording, ‘Kenneth’ is reunited with Joan Sims and Huge Paddick and a succession of side splitting sketches and songs cannot fail to ignite a passion for a simpler times. Written by Brian Cooke and Johnnie Mortimer who were responsible for such TV greats as ‘Man About The House’ Father, Dear Father’, ‘George and Mildred’ and ‘Robin’s Nest’.

‘Stop Messing About’ was a huge hit for radio in the 60’s and this production really captures the fun and innocence of the time.
