Hull Truck theatre

Hull Truck Theatre is one of the biggest successes in regional theatre. From humble beginnings in 1971, it really started to take off in 1984 when John Godber took over as artistic director. He decided to write a play that the locals could relate to. The result was ‘Up ‘n’ Under’, a play about a team of misfits playing for a pub rugby league team. It went on to become a West End hit, a film and even spawned a sequel.

Hull Truck has become synonymous with Godber’s plays and they are currently touring two of them – ‘Lucky Sods’, which tells the story of two ordinary people who become overnight millionaires, and ‘Beef’, a one man show about a man and his obsession with body building.

They have just announced that their new theatre space will open on April the 23rd. Construction began as long ago as 2006 and the new venue, which has cost £15million, will have a 440 seat main auditorium and a studio theatre which can seat 134.

The first play to be performed there will be Godber’s latest which is called ‘Funny Turns’.

The new theatre’s full opening season will be announced shortly with theatre tickets going on sale from the 16th of March.
