Controversial Play to Open
In 1993, two ten year old boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, murdered the two year old Jamie Bulger. It might seem one of those subjects, which even now, is too horrific and fraught with dangers to contemplate turning into theatre. However, the Swedish playwright, Niklas Radstrom, wrote a play called ‘Monsters’.
Now that play has been translated by Gabriella Berggren and it will receive its UK premiere at the Arcola Theatre. It will be directed by Christopher Haydon, who recently directed ‘A Number’ at Salisbury Playhouse.
The play is described as “four actors deconstruct what happened that February in a poignant theatrical experience, swapping and sharing roles to create a different performance every night.” It will run from the 6th of May until the 30th May.
Also coming to the Arcola is a success from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which now becomes a London show, ‘Lie of the Land’. The play was written by Torben Betts and is directed by Adam Barnard. The cast is Christopher Harper and Emily Bowker. They take over from Neal Barry and Nia Gwynne who played the roles in Edinburgh.
It plays from the 6th of April until the 2nd of May.
