Waiting for Godot Review

One of 2009’s biggest shows opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on April the 30th. ‘Waiting for Godot’, the classic absurdist drama is completing a UK tour before becoming a London show.

Sean Mathias directs. He has an incredible pedigree and is one of theatre land’s most successful directors. His productions have been nominated for 22 Oliviers and 14 Tony awards. As well as many productions at the National Theatre, he has in recent years directed two pantomimes for the Old Vic which starred Ian McKellen as the dame. His 2006 production of ‘The Cherry Orchard’ starring Annette Bening broke box office records. Last year he directed ‘Ring Round the Moon’ in the West End.

His latest show may well break more box office records and will almost certainly receive award nominations if the early word of mouth is anything to go by.

The production stars Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Ronald Pickup and Simon Callow. McKellen has become one of the best known actors in the world through film roles such as Gandalf in ‘Lord of the Rings’. He also played the arch enemy of Patrick Stewart in the X Men films, Magneto. Stewart played the mentor to the superheroes, Dr Xavier.
