Off West End Openings

If you want to catch a london show that could be the next big thing, here are some suggestions of productions opening on the fringe of the West End.

The Arcola Theatre in Dalston seems to get more ambitious with every month that passes. They already have two excellent studio spaces and they are now presenting a show in a new industrial space called Unit K. ‘Cirxus’ will run from the 25th of May to the 13th of June. The producers are FoolishPeople who intend to use mythology, shamanism, music and dance to bring back to life an English circus deserted in the 1950s.

Inspired by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, ‘The Filthiest Funniest Show in Town’ runs at the Old Red Lion Theatre from the 26th of May until the 13th of June. The writer is Dougie Blaxland and the producers are Live Wire Theatre. This show promises earthy humour, sexual jealousy and animal lust.

The Old Vic New Voices programme continues to support new work and one of the beneficiaries is ‘Whispering Happiness’ by Kenneth Emson which runs at the Tristan Bates Theatre from the 9th of June to the 4th of July. It is described as an urban fairytale which follows the choices made by two teenagers in a violent urban landscape. The excellent Abigail Hood is one of the stars.
