Show Overview

Written around 1603 ‘Othello’ is about love and desire, jealousy, hatred and racism. It is one of Shakespeare’s most monumental plays; a tragedy that it still relevant today and therefore consistently performed around the UK and all over world. It is a deeply intense and dark play that deals with the human condition laid bare.

Shakespeare has explored every inch of the human psyche with this play, introducing us to two of his most memorable characters; Othello and Iago. 

Othello is a brave, honourable and victorious high ranking Officer in the Army who has a loving relationship with his wife Desdemona. His world is shattered however, by another man’s consuming jealousy and rage. When Iago is overlooked by Othello who promotes a younger man ahead of him, his resulting rage fuels a macabre desire for revenge. He maintains a civil, even helpful exterior, whilst telling lies that create a web of suspicion amongst Othello and Desdemona and within Othello’s Army. Iago’s  hatred and racism are consuming and leads to the heartbreaking conclusion with Othello murdering Desdemona, whom he suspects of adultery, and then ultimately killing himself.

Lenny Henry has a good go at getting to grips with the complexities of Othello as he hangs up his comedy hat to give an outstanding, heartbreaking performance.
