Show Overview

‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ play comes to the West End and tickets can be booked now! Opening 9th September and booking until 9th January 2010, this promises to be a wonderful production of the iconic film from 1961. Staring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ was an instant hit and has proved to be one of the best loved films of all time. It also claims one of the most well known cinematic songs and Oscar winning, ‘Moon River’ by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer.

The stage production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s retells the story of Holly Golightly, a New York socialite; down to earth, beautifully naïve and wonderfully eccentric, she has the looks and the style but no money. She is beautiful and unhappy and longs for the riches that she sees through the window of the upmarket Jewellery store, ‘Tiffany’s’. As she sets her sights on marrying someone very rich, she meets Paul Varjak, a tenant in the flats where Holly lives with her cat simply called ‘Cat’. We discover that Paul is an out of work writer, down on his luck and with no money. For this reason, Holly does not consider him as a potential suiter, but without doubt they have a connection.

With two rich marriage possibilities, Holly’s real ‘husband’ turns up. The truth about her background are revealed but she insists the marriage was annulled and therefore she is still free to marry. However her husband to be has gone off and married someone else. Things between her and Paul begin to get interesting as they spend more time with each other but then she infuriates him by choosing to marry someone else.

When Holly ends up in prison for being innocently connected with a drug ring, her new rich Brazilian lover ends the relationship. In a tumultuous ending, Paul picks Holly up from prison with Cat who Holly turfs out into the rain. Bitter and dejected, Holly risks losing everything but when Paul leaves the cab accusing her of being afraid, she runs after him. Together they find Cat and kiss passionately.

Staring in this remake is the delightful Anna Friel as Holly and American Joseph Cross as Paul.

One not to miss! Book tickets now and relive the magic of ‘Moon River’ and the wonderful love affair between two lost souls.

A Little Night Music Review

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

nightmusic

The Menier Chocolate factory has succeeded in producing another hit London show. The revival of ‘A Little Night Music’ by Stephen Sondheim will now be running for an additional six weeks in the West End. It runs at the Garrick Theatre until the 5th of September. There is even talk that this show, which first hit Broadway in 1973, will be transferring there after its West End run.

This particular production started its life at the 150 seat Menier where it sold out. It then transferred to the Garrick where it officially opened on the 7th of April.

The show is based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film and includes numbers such as ‘Send in the Clowns’ which won a Grammy.

The cast includes Alexander Hanson, Hannah Waddingham, Jessie Buckley, Maureen Lipman, Gabriel Vick, Charlotte Page and Kelly Price.

Another hit musical production which started life at the Menier Chocolate Factory is Terry Johnson’s ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ which is playing at the Playhouse Theatre and currently stars Roger Allam and Philip Quast.

The Menier has built a remarkable reputation in a short time. Previous transfers have included ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘Dealer’s Choice’, ‘Fully Committed’ and ‘Sunday in the Park with George’.

‘West End Live’ is the largest free theatre festival in the world. Yes, that’s right, free theatre tickets! This year’s event, the fifth, will take place in London’s Leicester Square on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of June. Already, more than 15 West End musicals have agreed to perform.

Amongst the treats in store, you can expect to see Jerry Springer in ‘Chicago’ and reality television star Jodie Prenger in ‘Oliver’. Other shows featured include ‘Carousel’, ‘Hairspray’,’La Cage Aux Folles’, ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Avenue Q’, ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, ‘Jersey Boys’, ‘Thriller – Live’, ‘Sister Act’, ‘Wicked’, ‘We Will Rock You’, and ‘Stomp’. There are expected to be over 150,000 attending the festivities.

The organisers are Westminster City Council and the event is supported by the Society of London Theatre. The spectacle also includes live broadcasts, street entertainment and arts workshops. Additionally, there are exhibitions, many of them interactive, from some of the capital’s top tourist attractions and museums.

There will also be performances from Tom Tom Crew, the London Gay Men’s Chorus, So Jest End, the Sylvia Young Theatre School and the Player’s Theatre.

It all happens between 11am and 6pm on Saturday the 20th of June and from noon until 6pm the following day.

Breakfast at Tiffanys

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The Theatre Royal Haymarket’s in house seasons are fast establishing themselves as one of the most exciting forces in West End Theatre. They are some of the fastest selling shows in town so don’t wait to book your theatre tickets.

Yet another adaptation of a popular film is on its way as ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ will open on the 29th of September and is booking until the 9th of January 2010. It previews from the 9th of September.

Making her West End debut, Anna Friel will star as Holly Golightly, the part made famous in the 1961 film by Audrey Hepburn.

The show will be directed by Sean Mathias, who is Artistic Director for the entire season at the Haymarket. He is already enjoying success with his production of ‘Waiting for Godot’ which is currently running.

The show is being adapted by Samuel Adamson and he will be returning to Truman Capote’s original 1958 novella for inspiration rather than simply attempting to stage the film. However, one inclusion from the film that is definitely in is Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer’s song ‘Moon River’, which won an Oscar.

It will be Anna Friel’s first time on the London stage since ‘Lulu’ at the Almeida in 2001.
