Show Overview

‘Inherit the Wind’ is based on the 1925 Scopes ‘Monkey’ trial in which a high school teacher had to stand trial for teaching his class about Darwin’s theory of evolution.

John Scopes was accused of violating ‘Tennessee’s Butler Act’ which prohibited the teaching of evolution in all Tennessee’s schools. He was made to stand trial and defend himself against the charge whilst his legal team reminded the state and the prosecution that teachers were required by the State to teach from Hunter’s ‘Civic Biology’ which had a chapter on evolution.

It was a highly publicised trial in which a hefty team of defendants including Dudley Field Malone who was to give the most memorable speech of the trial about academic freedom. The Prosecution included William Jennings Bryan who was the Democratic nominee for President in 1896. A Presbyterian, Bryan was also a firm supporter of Prohibition (which was the illegal manufacture and sell of alcohol). 5 days after his success in the trial, following bad press, Bryan died in his sleep.

‘Inherit the Wind’ takes the story of the Scopes ‘Monkey’ trial in order to explore the machinations of the legal machine. As a huge legal battle is played out, ‘Inherit the Wind’ is in insight into another world where freedom of thought goes on trial.

Trevor Nunn has many years of experience behind him and has formerly been Artistic Director of both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National. Most recently he has been involved with the highly acclaimed ‘A Little Night Music’.

Kevin Spacey is Artistic Director of the Old Vic and has been in several productions there including ‘Speed the Plow’ and ‘Richard II’.
