War Horse Review

The National Theatre continues to enjoy many successes, both critical and commercial, under the stewardship of artistic director Nick Hytner. One show which has surpassed everything, with the possible exception of Alan Bennett’s ‘The History Boys’, is ‘War Horse’.

The show has already enjoyed two runs at the National itself and has transferred into the West End where it is currently booking at the New London Theatre until February 2010.

The show is an ensemble production with many actors playing multiple parts and operating the incredible puppets featured in the show. However, young Albert, the non equine star of the show is played by Kit Harrington. Kit only graduated from drama school last year and this is quite a professional debut. His parents are played by Colin Mace and Bronagh Gallagher.

Bronagh first came to the public’s attention in the Alan Parker film ‘The Commitments’. Since then she has become a regular on stage and screen. Her previous appearances at the National have been in ‘Every Good Boy Deserves Favour’ and ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’. Her most recent film appearance is in ‘Last Chance Harvey’.

Colin Mace has previously worked with the RSC on a number of productions including ‘Volpone’, ‘Othello’ and ‘Antony and Cleopatra’.

This show continues to be one of London’s hottest theatre tickets.
