The idea of ‘Six degrees of Separation’ is that if everybody is one step away from every person they know and two steps away from everybody that person knows, then at most, they are only six steps away from everyone on Earth. It is a concept popularised by playwright John Gaure.
The play is made all the more fascinating because it is based on a true story. In the 80′s David Hampton conned wealthy New Yorkers out of thousands by claiming to be Sidney Poitier’s son.
In 1993 there was a film adaptation staring Will Smith and Donald Sutherland and now it kicks off the 2010 season for the Old Vic, with Kevin Spacey still at the helm as Artistic Director.
‘Six Degrees of Separation’ is a shocking, sometimes hilarious, mystery about seemingly ordinary people and their believable lives.
The Kittredges are wealthy art dealers in New York. Into their lives strolls Paul, a young and pleasant chap who not only claims to be old college friends of their children but also to be the son of Sidney Poitier. They welcome him into their home and treat him like a son but all is not as it seems…
It is a lively and sharp play about two worlds colliding and is all the more worth watching for being on the Old Vic stage. A must see for 2010!
