‘The Shawshank Redemption’ was written by Stephen King as a novella and adapted to film in 1994. Starring Tim Robbins in the title role and the enigmatic Morgan Freeman, it received critical acclaim and is something of a cult movie nowadays, hailed by many as one of the greatest movies of all time.
Bringing it to the stage is Owen O’Neil and Dave Johns, directed by Peter Sheridan and staring Kevin Anderson (who starred in the 1991 movie ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’ and a member of the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company) and Reg E Cathey (‘Norman Wilson’ in US tv’s ‘The Wire’)
The lasting message from The Shawshank Redemption’ show is ‘fear can hold you prisoner but hope can set you free’ and this is how wrongly accused Andy Dufresne copes with his double life sentence in the notorious Shawshank prison. The ex banker has to adapt to a harsh life and a spirit crushing routine that leaves lesser men crying in the dark or worse still, attempting suicide. Andy maintains his quiet dignity as he is stripped of everything that makes a man human and he suffers appallingly at the hands of prison guards and some of the cons inside. His hope is the only thing he clings on to. That and the wonderful friendship e builds up with ‘Red’ a fellow inmate.
A wonderful story of friendship, inner strength, courage and of course hope. This is likely to be a huge box office hit in the West End for 2009/10.
