‘Every Good Boy Deserves a Favour’ was written by Tom Stoppard at the request of Andre Previn after the composer met Russian exile Viktor Fainberg. It is based in part, on the experiences of Vladamir Bukovsky another Russian dissident.

First performed in 1977 it is the story of a dissident locked up in an asylum. If he admits to being ill and cured through treatment, he will be released. If he maintains his integrity and refuses to lie, he will remain locked up.

The dissident shares his cell with a real lunatic who believes himself surrounded by an orchestra.

‘Every Good Boy Deserves a Favour’ is a darkly humorous play with music by Andre Previn, performed by pioneering orchestra ‘Southbank Sinfonia’.

Tom Stoppard’s interest in human rights often shows up as a theme in his plays, for example ‘Dogg’s Hamlet’ and ‘Cahoot’s Macbeth’.
