We all lead hectic lives at a breakneck pace in this modern world. We have so many obligations and such overfull schedules that we find it hard to look after ourselves. Balancing a career, a home life, social networking and more is a delicate act that takes skill and determination.

Sometimes we just need to learn to say no, take time out and pamper ourselves. When last have you given yourself a pat on the back? When was the last time you took some well deserved ‘me time’? If you can’t remember, and even if you can, it’s about time you do so again.

2nd May 1997

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

It is always exciting to see some of the country’s top young theatre makers collaborating. Jack Thorne has written for TV shows such as ‘Shameless’ and ‘Skins’. He has also written a number of plays, perhaps the best known being ‘Stacy’ and ‘Fanny and Faggot’. His latest play is called ‘2nd May 1997’ and will receive its premiere at the Bush Theatre where it will run from the 8th of September to the 10th of October. Theatre tickets for these shows are already available. The play will also undertake a short tour and will visit the Watford Palace Theatre from the 20th to the 21st of October, The Mercury Theatre in Colchester from the 22nd to the 24th of October and the Royal Exchange Studio in Manchester from the 27th to the 31st of October.

As you might expect if you have ever seen ‘Shameless’ or ‘Skins’, the show contains bad language, swearing and nudity. The play tells three personal tales set against the backdrop of 2nd May 1997, the day Labour swept to power after the Tories had run the country for 18 years.

The play is co-produced by Nabokov one of the best theatre companies to emerge in recent years run by joint artistic directors James Grieve and George Perrin. Perrin directs this show. He has assembled a first rate cast of Geoffrey Beevers, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Hugh Skinner, James Barrett, Jamie Samuel and Linda Broughton.

Faith Healer

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Concierge Desk keeps you up to date with the UK theatre scene. In particular, we able to give you the latest news on London theatre tickets and enable you to book directly through our website.

The playwright Brian Friel celebrates his eightieth birthday this year. He is one of the best known of twentieth century Irish writers perhaps only eclipsed in the theatre by Samuel Beckett. He has not only written plays already regarded as classics such as ‘Translations’, ‘Philadelphia! Here I Come’ and ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ which was revived at the Old Vic in the last year. He has also been responsible for sublime adaptations of many masterpieces such as  Chekov’s ‘Uncle Vanya’ and ‘Three Sisters’.

It is therefore wholly fitting that the wonderful, ‘Faith Healer’, one of Friel’s original plays is about to be revived by the exciting company New Perspectives. The play sounds slightly dry when you describe it as it consists of four monologues by three characters each describing the same events and their shared history. However, the play is by turns funny, poetic and deeply moving. It was not a great success in 1979 when it was first produced on Broadway. However, it has more than made up for that with revivals including one at Dublin’s Gate Theatre which went on to play the West End and Broadway to critical acclaim. It starred Ralph Fiennes, Ian McDiarmid and Cherry Jones.

It’s A Wonderful Life

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Hear it first here at Concierge Desk, your guide to the best theatre in the world. Not only do we tell you about shows, we also offer the very best deals in cheap theatre tickets.

A musical theatre version of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, the classic feel-good film will have its world premiere at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich where it will run from the 17th of September until the 3rd of October. Previews commence on the 10th of September. It is hoped it will go on to receive a West End transfer.

Avalon Promotions are producing the show. They have become something of a leviathan on the comedy circuit. Indeed, as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has become more and more focused on comedy, they seem to dominate the Festival. However, they have produced a musical before, ‘Jerry Springer – The Opera’ which won scores of awards during its time at the National and in the West End. It also caused controversy when it was roundly condemned by Christian extremists, many of whom had even seen the show before taking offence.

This show promises no such controversy. The 1946 Frank Capra film tells the story of a man in small town America who is contemplating what he sees as a wasted life and considering suicide. Fortunately, his guardian angel Clarence has something to say about this.

1940s America is making a comeback it seems as there will also be a theatre version of the Oscar winning 1947 film ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ produced by Farnham Maltings and touring from November into the new year.

Here at Concierge Desk, we provide theatre tickets and all you need for your trip to London.
