Director Howard Davies won a Laurence Olivier Award for his ‘All My Sons’ theatre production in 2000 which was staged at the National Theatre. In this latest production, he brings together two very familiar and much loved television stars; David Suchet is best known for his portrayal of Belgium Detective Poirot and Zoe Wanamaker stars in the hit Sitcom ‘My Family’.
These two great actors take on the roles of husband and wife in this tragic Arthur Miller play about family; love and loyalty and secrets. The chief character Joe Keller is 61 years old and loves his family above everything. One of his sons is believed to have been killed in action during the war, so he is keen to see his remaining son happy; Chris wants to marry Ann but Ann was once engaged to Keller’s dead son. Keller’s wife Kate, cannot cope with the arrangement as she does not believe her son to be dead. Whilst struggling to come to terms with her personal circumstances, she is also harbouring a terrible secret for Joe.
Years before, Keller had knowingly been manufacturing World War II planes with defective parts; many young pilots subsequently lost their lives but Keller’s part in the deaths remained concealed.
Miller based ‘All My Son’s’ on a true account he read about. In ‘All My Son’s’, Miller explores one mans morality; a sadly misguided family man with questionable integrity.
