‘The Fantasticks’ is based loosely on the play ‘The Romancers’ by Edmond Rostand and tells the story of two neighbouring fathers who build a wall between their two gardens. Their ultimate aim is for their children to fall in love and marry, going along with the theory that children will do whatever their parents don’t want them to do. It works at first as love indeed blossoms but then the discovery is made and the children, in anger and indignation, go off travelling to live their own lives independent from one another.

This symbolic musical holds the record for the longest running musical in history, originally opening on 3rd May 1960 and running for 42 years, playing 17,162 performances before closing January 13 2002. ‘The Fantasticks’ has elements running throughout from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’ and ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’.

The durability of ‘The Fantasticks’ has to be in part due to the fabulous score by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt; it includes songs such as ‘Much More’, ‘I Can See It’ and ‘Try to Remember’.
