‘The Caretaker’ is one of Pinter’s best loved plays as well as being his first big hit. Modern audiences continue to appreciate the intrigue and compelling nature of ‘The Caretaker’.

Davies is a tramp who is befriended by Aston, a mentally challenged man, who takes him home to his apartment. What follows is a a series of often tense, sometimes absurd interaction between the two men, often about Davies’ need for new shoes in order to get to ‘Sidcup’ to locate his ‘papers’. When Aston’s brother Mick enters the play, the tension increases as each man in turn has a reason to distrust the other. Critics point to ‘The Caretaker’ as being within the ‘Theatre of the Absurd’ as there are moments of the ridiculous involving a hanging a bucket that catches rain water and a neatly choreographed struggle.

As the unlikely situation continues, Davies is offered the part of the ‘Caretaker’ by first Aston and then Mick but it is never a realistic option; Aston referring back to the need to get to ‘Sidcup’ for references. As the action of the play continues, the presence of Davies threatens to alienate the brothers from each other but eventually his suspicion of Aston strikes a chord with Mike who stands by his brother and terminates Davies’ ‘employment’ as caretaker.

‘The Caretaker’ theatre production is an intriguing and sometimes baffling play with wonderful Pinter dialogue.

Jonathan Pryce is a huge star of stage and screen and this production is superb, not to be missed!
