The Woman in Black
Saturday, January 30th, 2010The winter seems to be a time when ghost stories, and the opportunity to be scared silly, seem to be a particularly attractive proposition. It is easy to see the pleasure in a good story, or as Shakespeare would put it, a winter’s tale. The thought of sitting in front of a roaring log fire, whilst safe from the outside world is guaranteed to make anyone feel good.
However, why people would want to go out to the theatre to be scared out of their wits is harder to understand. They clearly do, though, as ‘The Woman in Black’ is not only the scariest show in the West End, it is also one of the longest running. Sales of theatre tickets show no sign of slowing as the play continues its run at the Fortune Theatre, with theatre tickets already on sale.
The play is adapted from the novel by Susan Hill and calls on many of the ideas most familiar in ghost stories written by authors such as Charles Dickens and M R James. The play tells the story via two actors who become all of the characters in the horrific tale. The frights come from a mixture of theatrical effects, which we will not spoil by giving any more information about the production.
