Show Type

Ghosts is a Play

Show Overview

Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen wrote this play in 1881 and it remains a powerful and poignant drama.

The play centres on Mrs Alving who is making the necessary arrangements to dedicate an orphanage to her late husband. However, this very public acknowledgement in her husband’s memory hides the truth of the real man; a reckless and drunken womaniser who made Mrs Alving’s life a misery.

Returning to help with the public dedication is Mrs Alving’s son Osvald; a struggling artist, Osvald brings his own baggage to the occasion, not least of all a fatal dose of syphilis. Her son’s arrival is more tragic because he had been a vestige of hope and innocence in her life and she had sent him away in order to save him from the sordid world she found herself in.

‘Ghosts’ dips into the Social hierarchy that Ibsen was preoccupied with and makes a mockery of the so called upper classes and their sense of duty. It is a powerful drama that deals with illegitimacy and rampant, taboo disease.
