The 39 Steps

The Criterion Theatre is at the heart of the West End, right next to Piccadilly Circus where Shaftesbury Avenue crosses Regent Street. It has been the home for a number of years for one of the funniest shows in London’s theatre land. ‘The 39 Steps’ is an adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, which is in turn an adaptation of John Buchan’s novel. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

The novel was first published in 1915 and is the first of a number which feature Buchan’s very own adventure hero Richard Hannay. The play, whilst staying true to the story, is an affectionate parody of the genre and the film version in particular. The production shows no sign of tiring or closing. However, the sooner you book theatre tickets for this show, the sooner you will be able to go back and see it again and again as many of the play’s fans do.

The show is also playing Liverpool for Christmas and goes on an extensive UK and Ireland tour in 2010 that is currently expected to end in June.

The play has all the characters from the film but they are played by only four actors. John Hopkins plays Hannay throughout. Natalie Walter plays various attractive women. Stephen Ventura and Stephen Critchlow play the rest of the cast, including the other women.
