Serenading Louie

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The cast for the Donmar Warehouse’s production of ‘Serenading Louie’ by Lanford Wilson has now been announced.

Directed by Simon Curtis, the show runs at the Donmar from 16th February to 27th March, with previews beginning on 11th February. The play features two suburban, American couples as they face the strenuous realities of their failing marriages and deceptive lifestyles. Theatre tickets for all performances are now on sale.

Leading the cast is Geraldine Somerville as Mary, who has been recently playing Lily Potter in the Harry Potter films. Other cinema credits include ‘Sixty-Six’ and ‘Gosford Park’. She is also known for her work on television, where she played the regular part of Penhaligon in the ‘Cracker’ series with Robbie Coltrane. Her previous stage credits include ‘Blue Remembered Hills’ at the National Theatre, and ‘The Treatment’ and ‘I Am Yours’ at the Royal Court Theatre.

Somerville is joined by Jason O’Mara, who many know from his television appearances in successful show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. He currently plays the lead in the US version of ‘Life on Mars’. Previous stage credits include ‘Popcorn’ in the West End and ‘The School for Scandal’ with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Also in the cast is Charlotte Emmerson, whose television credits include ‘Vincent’ and ‘Outlaws’. Previous stage credits include the title role in ‘Therese Raquin’ at the National Theatre, where she has also appeared in ‘The Good Hope’ and ‘The Cherry Orchard’.

Eigengrau

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Directed by Polly Findlay and writted by Penelope Skinner, ‘Eigengrau’ (pronounced ay-gen-gr-ow) is a black comedy that centres around the relationships, or rather lack of them, between four young people living and working in London.

Director Polly Findlay is not only a fine actress with television credits such as ‘Trial By Fire’ and ‘Doctors’ and great reviews for her stage performances, including the role of Natasha in the Manchester Royal Exchange’s production of ‘Three Sisters’. She is also one of the UK’s most promising young theatre directors.

In 2007, she won the prestigious JMK award; the top award for new directors. Previous winners include Thea Sharrock, Bijan Shebani and Natalie Abrahmi, which gives an idea of the kudos attached to the award.

Although Polly has won plaudits for her productions of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at the BAC, ‘Thyestes’ at the Arcola and many new works for companies like Nabokov, 2010 could well be the year she breaks into the mainstream. Polly starts the year at The Bush Theatre by directing ‘Eigengrau’, which will run from 10th March until 10th April. Theatre tickets are already available.

Only one member of the cast has been announced so far. Sinead Matthews, who is currently starring at the National Theatre in ‘Our Class’, has also starred in the recently released British film ‘The Boat That Rocked’, and 2005′s ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

All the Fun of the Fair is a Musical

Show Overview / Review

‘All the Fun of the Fair’ is a warm and intriguing musical based around the hits by 70′s and 80′s pop star David Essex. It includes well known and much loved tracks including: ‘Hold Me Close’, ‘Gonna Make You a Star’, ‘Winter’s Tale’, ‘Silver Dream Machine’ and ‘Rock On’. ‘All the Fun of the Fair’ has its’ inspiration from David’s debut album and was written by Jon Conway who created the touring musical ‘Boogie Nights’.

Essex plays fun fair owner Levi Lee who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his wife and his rebellious teenage son. Whilst still grieving for his wife and uncertain about his son’s upbringing, Levi has the unwelcome attentions of another woman.

‘All the Fun of the Fair’ is about love, laughter and loyalty and is set against the machinations of the fairground with Levi uncertain at the helm. The music of David Essex underpins the unfolding events beautifully in what has been described as a “musical merry-go-round”.

This show is a must see for any fan of nostalgic pop.

The Whisky Taster

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Written by James Graham, whose previous plays include ‘Little Madam’ and the superb ‘Eden’s Empire’, new play ‘The Whisky Taster’ tells “a technicolour story about seeing things too clearly in a city that never stands still.”

The excellent James Grieve directs. He is currently one of the co-artistic directors of Nabokov, who have one of the best reputations in the UK for exciting new theatre. In fact, he has also been recruited to take over the reins at the prestigious Paines Plough next February.

Sam Barnett plays Barney; an advertising whizz kid who has “the ability to feel, smell and taste colours, and to translate these sensations into words.” Barnett’s television credits include ‘Beautiful People’, ‘Desperate Romantics’ and ‘Strange’, and he has starred in films ‘Bright Star’, ‘Mrs Henderson Presents’ and ‘The History Boys.’ He also performed in ‘His Dark Materials’ at the National Theatre.

Kate O’Flynn plays Nicola, another high flyer. Her television credits include ‘Kingdom’ and ‘The Palace.’ She played Susie Cross in Mike Leigh’s fabulous ‘Happy-Go-Lucky.’ Previous theatre includes ‘Beyond the Tracks’ with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Simon Merralls plays the title character, who opens up a new way of looking at life to the two youngsters. His previous credits include ‘Twelfth Night’ with the Royal Shakespeare Company and ‘Life of Galileo’ at the National Theatre in London.

‘The Whisky Taster’ will run at the Bush Theatre from 20th January to 20th February, and theatre tickets are already on sale.
