Heldenplatz

Friday, February 26th, 2010

An Austrian play, originally condemned in its own country comes to the Arcola Theatre where it will run from 10th February until 6th March. ‘Heldenplatz’ by Thomas Bernhard investigates the complicity of some Austrians with Hitler’s Germany. The play is set in 1988, but it suggests, that for some people, things haven’t really changed in over forty years. theatre tickets for this show are now on sale.

Annie Castledine and Annabel Arden direct. Ruined

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The Almeida Theatre in North London surely deserves more critical recognition. Whilst awards and plaudits are showered on the Donmar Warehouse and the Royal Court Theatre in London as a matter of course, this theatre, under the artistic direction of Michael Attenborough does not always seem to get the acclaim it deserves. 2010 looks set to be an excellent year with the sale of theatre tickets going very well.

‘Rope’, a jazz age murder story has got things underway and has now sold all theatre tickets for its run. It will be followed by a starry production of ‘Measure for Measure’ which runs from 12th February to 10th April. Then there is another contrast as ‘Ruined’ by Lynn Nottage, set in a small mining town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, runs from 15th April to 5th June.

The director Indhu Rubasingham is also having a good year and will come straight to this production from having helmed ‘Disconnect’ at the Royal Court.

The cast includes Jenny Jules. Her previous stage work includes ‘Death and the King’s Horsemen’ at the National Theatre in London. She has also been a regular at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn where productions have included ‘The Colour of Justice’, ‘Wine in the Wilderness’ and ‘Walk Hard’. Previous appearances at the Almeida include ‘Big White Fog’, ‘The Homecoming’ and ‘A Chain Play’.

The Caretaker

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Harold Pinter’s ‘The Caretaker’ plays at the Trafalgar Studios until 17th April. This very famous play tells the story of the brothers Aston and Mick and the effect an interloper, in the form of homeless man Davies, has on their relationship. The play is full of Pinter’s wonderfully bleak humour and trademark dialogue. The various characters use language to cajole and bully each other. The Telegraph has described the production as “spellbinding”, the Independent “superb” and the Daily Mail “glorious”. theatre tickets are available although very limited for some performances.

Jonathan Pryce leads the cast as Davies in this production which started life at the Liverpool Everyman. His cinema credits include ‘Stigmata’, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, ‘G I Joe’ and the three Pirates of the Caribbean films. Television appearances include ‘Clone’ and ‘Cranford’. His previous stage credits include ‘My Fair Lady’ at the National Theatre in London, ‘Dimetos’ at the Donmar Warehouse and ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ in the West End.

Peter Mcdonald plays Aston. He played alongside Pryce in the recent production of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ and other theatre includes ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ and ‘Resurrection Blues’ at the Old Vic, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ and ‘A Lie of the Mind’ at the Donmar Warehouse and ‘The Aristocrats’ at the National Theatre in London.

The Promise

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond has a fantastic reputation for reviving lost plays and also selling many theatre tickets. That is, plays that have often not been performed since their premieres in the early twentieth century or before. Whilst this interesting policy occasionally backfires with unkind critics suggesting these forgotten classics should stay forgotten, it usually results in a fantastic night at the theatre. Certainly the Orange Tree’s sale of theatre tickets suggests they are doing something right.

The Orange Tree also champions new work although it has to be said their premieres often feel like plays from a bygone era. ‘The Promise’, which runs at the Orange Tree from 17th February to 20th March, is a case in point. This is a new play by Ben Brown, whose previous work includes ‘All Things Considered’ and ‘Larkin with Women’, which won the TMA best new play award in 2001.

Although it is a new play, Brown has garnered a reputation for being able to turn what seem like dry subjects into great drama. This play is set at the outbreak of the First World War. It deals with people around the Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. The play is described as full of “political and sexual intrigue.” The politics centre on the in-fighting amongst British Jews as to whether or not they should support the colonisation of Palestine by the Jews. The Jews had lacked a homeland and suffered a great deal of persecution, but the community was divided on what should be done. theatre tickets are on sale now.
