‘Carmen’ presented by Raymond Gubbay is to be the O2’s first fully staged opera. For three performances only, ‘Carmen’ will be the showcase that will be presented in magnificent format with a company of world class singers and musicians.

The French opera is probably one of the world’s most popular and well known operas. By Georges Bizet and based upon the novella by Prosper Merimee, its’ genre is Opera Comique; singing interspersed with spoken dialogue.

‘Carmen’ is set in Seville in Spain and is about the sultry, fiery and beautiful gypsy Carmen who woos corporal Don Jose, an inexperienced Soldier. Their passionate affair leads to tragedy as he rejects his former lover and then, encouraged by Carmen, he leads a mutiny within his regiment and joins a band of smugglers. Carmen is a free spirit however and she eventually falls in love with another man, the bullfighter Escamillo. Burning with rage and jealousy, the spurned Don Jose kills Carmen.

This Opera is a favourite and is a great place to start if you have no experience. The  heat of Carmen’s love affairs is expressed with the passion and highly charged emotion of Spanish dance. It includes the  rousing ‘Song of the Toreador’, the beguiling ‘Seguidilla’, the tantalising ‘Habanera’ and the enchanting ‘Flower Song’; sensual music that perfectly captures the very essence of Spain

Accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gareth Hancock, this production of ‘Carmen’ is a truly exciting event, staged on an epic scale.
