Measure for Measure
We’re already a decade into the 21st century, but one thing seems timeless; the appreciation of William Shakespeare’s plays at London theatre.
Last year saw two headline grabbing productions of ‘Hamlet’, starring Jude Law and David Tennant. This year will see at least two more with Rory Kinnear set to play the vacillating Dane for the National Theatre and John Simm opening in Sheffield. To warm things up, both for the public and Rory in particular, he stars in ‘Measure for Measure’ at the Almeida Theatre. He is joined by Anna Maxwell Martin and Ben Miles in a production directed by Michael Attenborough.
‘Measure for Measure’ is a great play about hypocrisy and corruption in the body politics. It has obvious relevance today. theatre tickets are already on sale for this show, which runs from 12th February until 10th April.
This promises to be a true ensemble production, with even the relatively minor parts played by superb actors. For example, Trevor Cooper plays Pompey. He has previously appeared at the Almeida in ‘The Late Henry Moss’ and ‘Awake and Sing.’ Other theatre credits include ‘Arcadia’ in the West End last year, ‘King John’ and ‘The Lieutenant of Innishmore’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company and ‘Playing with Fire’ at the National Theatre in London. His television credits include ‘Ruby in the Smoke’ and ‘Tess of the D’Urbevilles.’ Films include ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ and ‘Somerstown.’
