New At The National

Nicholas Hytner, the artistic director of the National Theatre, has announced many of the productions for the next year. The National, in common with almost all of London’s theatres, has been enjoying record sales of theatre tickets and looks to continue that success with some wonderful shows.

The Olivier is the largest of the three auditoria at the National. Forthcoming shows there include Middleton’s Jacobean tragedy ‘Women Beware Women’ directed by Marianne Elliott. Harriet Walter stars in the production. ‘Hamlet’ was announced some time ago and will star Rory Kinnear and Clare Higgins. It is directed by Nicholas Hytner.

The former artistic director at the National, Richard Eyre, returns to the South Bank to direct Moira Buffini’s ‘Welcome to Thebes.’ Michael Grandage, who runs the Donmar Warehouse, makes his National debut directing ‘Danton’s Death’ by Buchner. This play has been given new elements by Howard Brenton who has written a fresh adaptation. Toby Stephens stars in a fascinating role.

In the Lyttleton, Howard Davies will direct a new play by JT Rogers. In addition, Terence Rattigan’s ‘After the Dance’ is revived by Thea Sharrock and Alan Bennett’s ‘The Habit of Art’ returns in July with a brand new cast ahead of a national tour. Rupert Goold will direct a new play by Mike Bartlett called ‘Earthquakes in London.’ This is a co-production with Headlong and opens in August, so theatre tickets are currently unavailable.
