Southwark Playhouse

If you are used to the comfortable seats of the Royal Court, the spaciousness of the National Theatre in London and the wonderfully cosy atmosphere of many of the West End’s theatres, you may find the Southwark Playhouse something of a shock to your system. Just along from London Bridge station, it rests under the arches and is more like a warehouse than a theatre. You will need to be wrapped up well during the winter months although the auditorium soon warms up once it is full of people. The seating is on benches and on busy nights will require you to be fairly friendly with those sitting around you. The sound of the trains passing is not a major distraction and once engrossed in the play it becomes hardly noticeable.

Despite all the above, there is no doubting the venue’s artistic credentials. They have started 2010 with a show that has already completely sold out all available theatre tickets. This is perhaps not surprising when you consider the coup in casting Celia Imrie as Mrs Malaprop in ‘The Rivals.’ Sheridan’s work has been able to stand the test of time.

Don’t despair because ‘The Rivals’ has sold out, there are still theatre tickets available for Brendan Behan’s ‘The Hostage’ running from 3rd to 20th February and for ‘Shakespeare’s ‘Henry V’ which runs from 24th February to 20th March.
