New At The National

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Nicholas Hytner, the artistic director of the National Theatre, has announced many of the productions for the next year. The National, in common with almost all of London’s theatres, has been enjoying record sales of theatre tickets and looks to continue that success with some wonderful shows.

The Olivier is the largest of the three auditoria at the National. Forthcoming shows there include Middleton’s Jacobean tragedy ‘Women Beware Women’ directed by Marianne Elliott. Harriet Walter stars in the production. ‘Hamlet’ was announced some time ago and will star Rory Kinnear and Clare Higgins. It is directed by Nicholas Hytner.

The former artistic director at the National, Richard Eyre, returns to the South Bank to direct Moira Buffini’s ‘Welcome to Thebes.’ Michael Grandage, who runs the Donmar Warehouse, makes his National debut directing ‘Danton’s Death’ by Buchner. This play has been given new elements by Howard Brenton who has written a fresh adaptation. Toby Stephens stars in a fascinating role.

In the Lyttleton, Howard Davies will direct a new play by JT Rogers. In addition, Terence Rattigan’s ‘After the Dance’ is revived by Thea Sharrock and Alan Bennett’s ‘The Habit of Art’ returns in July with a brand new cast ahead of a national tour. Rupert Goold will direct a new play by Mike Bartlett called ‘Earthquakes in London.’ This is a co-production with Headlong and opens in August, so theatre tickets are currently unavailable.

Avenue Q

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The hilarious musical ‘Avenue Q’ is on the move once again. It finishes its run at the Gielgud Theatre in London, in March. In April, the Broadway revival of ‘Hair’ takes over at the Gielgud. Over at Wyndham’s theatre Stephen Daldry’s production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ has won an award and closes on 13th March. ‘Avenue Q’ opens there on 19th March. Theatre tickets for all these shows are on sale now.

Avenue Q is a spoof of the children’s television favourite ‘Sesame Street’ and most of the leading characters are puppets. The songs are certainly rude, but arguably very funny and include unusual titles such as ‘Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist’ and ‘What Do You Do With A BA In English?’

Daniel Boys plays Princeton and Rod. His previous theatre credits include tours of ‘Rent’, ‘Grease’ and ‘Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds.’

Edward Baruwa plays the janitor Gary Coleman. He has previously appeared in the West End in ‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘Jerry Springer, The Opera’ and ‘Dancing in the Streets’ in which he played Lionel Richie.

Christopher Fry plays Brian. He has appeared on our television screens in programmes such as ‘State of Play.’ His previous stage credits include ‘The Hot Mikado’ and ‘Oh What a Lovely War.’

Six Degrees Of Separation

Friday, February 19th, 2010

‘Six Degrees of Separation’ by John Guare and directed by David Grindley is playing at the Old Vic until 3rd April. The play, already a huge hit on Broadway, is based on the true story of an outrageous confidence trickster who infiltrated the upper classes by passing himself off as Sidney Poitier’s son. Theatre tickets are still available for this show.

This production stars Lesley Manville. This down-to-earth actress is one of film director Mike Leigh’s favourites, having already appeared in hits such as ‘Vera Drake’, ‘All Or Nothing’ and ‘’Secrets and Lies.’ She also stars in his forthcoming, as yet untitled, film. Her television appearances include ‘Cranford’, ‘North and South’ and ‘Real Women.’ Her stage credits are also particularly impressive. She has been in ‘The Alchemist’, ‘Pillars of the Community’ and ‘Her Naked Skin’ at the National Theatre in London. Furthermore, she has performed in ‘Top Girls’, ‘Three Sisters’ and ‘The Mother’ at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

Anthony Head also stars in the play. He first came to fame as part of the ‘Gold Blend’ couple in a series of long-running coffee commercials. His television appearances include ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Little Britain’, ‘Manchild’ and ‘Free Agents.’ Previous stage credits include West End productions of ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Pirates of Penzance’ and ‘Chess.’

‘Six Degrees of Separation’ runs for just ninety minutes with no interval. This means that you’ll have plenty of time for an excellent meal as well. At Concierge Desk, we have great deals combining theatre tickets and meals at top London restaurants.

The White Guard

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Howard Davies is quite simply one of the best directors working in theatre today. He is an associate of the National Theatre and regularly directs productions for them. In recent years, some of his most notable productions have been Russian epics. In 2007 he directed a fantastic ensemble cast in the 5 star production ‘Philistines.’ This was an adaptation by Andrew Upton of Gorky’s play. Last year ‘Burnt By The Sun’ was based on one of Russia’s finest films. Now, he turns his attention to another Andrew Upton adaptation. This time it is ‘The White Guard’ by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Mikhail Bulgakov was a literary genius who had the misfortune to live under the totalitarian regime of Stalin after the Russian Revolution went sour.

Theatre tickets are on sale now for the National Theatre in London. The cast includes Justine Mitchell and Conleth Hill, both of whom were in ‘Philistines’ and Marcus Cunningham who was in both the previous Russian plays.

Justine’s other theatre credits include ‘Twelfth Night’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the role of Hedda Gabler for the Gate Theatre in Dublin. Her films include ‘A Cock and Bull Story’ and ‘Inside I’m Dancing.’ Her recent television credits include ‘Wild at Heart’ and ‘Your Bad Self.’

The Olivier award winning Conleth Hill was in the recent Woody Allen film ‘Whatever Works.’ His television credits include the Jennifer Saunders series ‘Vivienne Vyle’ in which he played Vivienne’s husband.
