The White Guard

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

One of the most exciting prospects in 2010 is the third of Howard Davies’ recent productions exploring Russia in the twentieth century. It started with Gorky’s ‘Philistines’ in 2007, a show which received five star reviews left, right and centre. The show demonstrated how well the National Theatre, particularly the theatre in London does ensemble productions. Although it featured star names like Ruth Wilson and Rory Kinnear, who continue to rise in the firmament, egos were left at the door of the rehearsal room ensuring that this was one of the hottest theatre tickets for 2007.

In 2009, an adaptation of the Russian film ‘Burnt by the Sun’ was a hit and received more award nominations. This year a new version of Mikhail Bulgakov’s ‘The White Guard’ comes to the National Theatre. theatre tickets are currently available for performances from 15th March to 15th June.

The play is described, accurately, as “unrivalled in its depiction of the near-farcical mayhem of civil war across a vast and vivid canvas”.

The show stars Conleth Hill, Justine Mitchell, Marcus Cunningham, Daniel Flynn and Paul Higgins. Hill and Mitchell also starred in ‘Philistines’ and Cunningham was in both ‘Philistines’ and ‘Burnt by the Sun’.

The Willy Russell Season

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Two fantastic plays written by Liverpool’s Willy Russell are to be revived by the Menier Chocolate Factory. They will run in repertory from 26th March to 8th May and theatre tickets are already on sale. The shows promise to sell out and don’t be surprised if at least one of the shows gets a transfer to London’s West End theatre.

‘Shirley Valentine’ will star Meera Syal. Meera first came to prominence in the hit sketch comedy show ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ and has also starred in ‘The Kumars at No 42’ and ‘Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee’. Her last appearance on stage in ‘Rafta Rafta’ at the National Theatre in London prompted great reviews for the show, but some reservations about her stagecraft.

‘Educating Rita’ will co-star Larry Lamb and Laura Dos Santos. Lamb’s profile has never been higher, having starred in two of the biggest shows on television over Christmas. He was the loveable dad Mick in ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and the scheming Archie Mitchell in ‘Eastenders’. His previous stage work includes ‘Five Wives of Maurice Pinder’ at the National Theatre and ‘Fool for Love’ in the West End.

Laura Dos Santos’ previous work includes ‘Look Back in Anger’ at the Jermyn Street Theatre and ‘In Your Hands’ at the New End.

The Woman in Black

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

‘The Woman in Black’ is in its 21st year and currently has theatre tickets available through until 18th December. It is without doubt, the scariest show in London’s West End theatre. Whilst there are some wonderful effects, which we will not spoil by describing them, many of the biggest chills come from the story and the manner in which it is told.

The play is adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s novel. A cast of just two actors bring the many characters to life. Arthur Kipps has a story he wish to tell and comes to a professional actor to help him be able to tell it in an engaging and interesting way.

Arthur Kipps is played by Julian Forsyth who has appeared regularly on our television screens. His credits include ‘A Touch of Frost’, ‘The Curse of Steptoe’ and ‘Diamond Geezer’. He also starred in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Royal Festival Hall and ‘Gone With the Wind’ in London West End theatre.

The Actor is played by Christopher Naylor. He has been a regular at the Orange Tree Theatre where productions have included ‘Mary Goes First’, ‘Factors Unforeseen’ and ‘Mountain Hotel’. Other credits include ‘Blue/Orange’ at the New Victoria Theatre and ‘Hay Fever’ for director Peter Hall.

More from the Donmar

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The Donmar Warehouse, under the artistic direction of Michael Grandage, is always looking for new ways to expand and new projects to undertake. Last year, it enjoyed phenomenal success with a West End residency at Wyndhams Theatre. Not only did the critics love the shows which included ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘Hamlet’, the audiences loved them with the shows contributing to the West End’s record sales of theatre tickets.

Now the Donmar has announced that from this year it will have a three month season at the Trafalgar Studios, which will showcase the best in young directing talent. The first season will open on September 30th.

The first production will be Beau Willimon’s ‘Lower Ninth’ directed by Charlotte Westenra. This will be followed by ‘Novecento’ which is an adaptation of an Italian play about a jazz musician, written by Alessandro Baricco and directed by Roisin McBrinn. The season concludes with Jean Cocteau’s ‘Les Parents Terribles directed by Christopher Rolls. theatre tickets for all shows, which promise to sell out quickly, are on sale.

Christopher Rolls has previously assisted at the National Theatre in London, the Donmar Warehouse and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His own productions have included a superb ‘The Beaver Coat’ at the Finborough Theatre.

Six Degrees of Separation – A Review

Monday, March 29th, 2010

‘Six Degrees of Separation’ by John Guare plays at the Old Vic until 3rd April. theatre tickets for all shows are available.

The play is ninety minutes straight through, with no interval. For the most part, it crackles along, particularly at the beginning, but it does lapse into the occasional lengthy monologue. In particular, there is one delivered by the character of Paul which talks about the cult novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’ and seems to be striving too hard for significance.

This is a reflection on the writing rather than the acting as Obi Abili playing the pivotal character of Paul, a psychologically damaged young man who intrudes upon the lives of the wealthy on New York’s East Side, is excellent. In fact, the acting throughout is first class, with Lesley Manville especially good. Anthony Head’s character does not have the depths of hers but he also makes the role look effortless.

The setting is minimalist and some of the audience’s laughs are at this rather than the humour in the play. Valuable possessions are held by auctioneers’ assistants in the theatre’s boxes. A number of the supporting characters seem to run on to the stage, deliver a line and run off it again, which breaks the careful naturalism which has been built up during the early, longer scenes.
