Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story

For the first time since the hit show closed at the West End’s Duchess Theatre in London, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story will be reprised on the fringe Upstairs at The Gatehouse. theatre tickets are currently on sale.

12 actor-musicians come together in John Plews production of the Jukebox musical, led by Roger Rowley as Buddy. Also in the cast are Henry Barrett (Crazy For You), Joe Slovick (Spring Awakening), Alex Wadham, Nicky Swift, Patrick Rowe, Richie Hart, Sean Green, Deanna Farnell, Jason Blackwater, Emily Altneu and Andrew Ashford.

Taken from the 1978 biographical film The Buddy Holly Story, the show centres on the 1950′s rock n roll legend Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1959. Original name Charles Hardin Holley, he was hailed as rock n rolls most creative and influential force and an inspiration to contemporaries and future musicians alike. The story begins with 19 year old Holly as a rising country music singer. With his friends Joe and Jerry, Buddy and The Crickets start experimenting with rock and roll – a new, controversial style of music. The show features such hits as That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Chantilly Lace and Johnny B Goode.

Paul Hipp starred as Buddy in Rob Bettinson’s production at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, in October 1989. After six years the show transferred to the Strand Theatre where it continued for a further six years. The show also traveled to Broadway, opening at The Schubert Theatre in 1990.
