The RSC has announced its new musical version of Matilda is going to be shown in London theatre; taken from the 1988 children’s story by Roald Dahl. The production will be one of the last staged at the Courtyard theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and will run from November 2010 into January 2011. Theatre tickets for Matilda: The Musical are on sale now.
Matilda follows the story of an intelligent young girl who discovers that she has kinetic powers and can control objects by the power of her mind. Her parent’s show her little love and attention, but during her first term at school she develops a relationship with her schoolteacher that has a profound effect on them both. It is advised that booking is done sooner rather than later, as theatre tickets for this show are set to sell out quickly.
This new musical version presents music and lyrics from comedian Tim Minchin, with book by Dennis Kelly. Matthew Warchus directs the show.
Artistic director Michael Boyd commented on show at a press conference last year, saying that “Matilda is a magical and darkly funny book that the RSC has wanted to bring to life on stage for many years. I’m delighted – not least as the father of an eight-year-old girl – that Dahl’s classic tale will play in Stratford for a family audience to enjoy at Christmas.”
The creative team of Kelly, Warchus and Minchin bring “a combination of creativity, wit and mischief to the production which will make the show an experience to remember. We’re very grateful to the Dahl Estate for allowing us to adapt the book.”
