Educating Rita

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

The Olivier award-winning Educating Rita by Willy Russell has opened at The Menier Chocolate Factory, celebrating its first major London revival. Shirley Valentine, another of Russell’s celebrated shows, will play in repertoire as part of The Willy Russell season. Theatre tickets for both shows are currently on sale.

Rita is a brash, working-class Liverpudlian working as a hairdresser and married to Denny. The monotony of her daily life spurs her to enroll on an Open University course to study English Literature, where she encounters university lecturer and alcoholic Dr Frank Bryant. The effect the two have on each other is quite profound, and as Rita develops new self-confidence, Frank is forced to question his attitude and understanding of life and education.

Jeremy Sam directs the revival of Educating Rita, which premiered in 1980 at The Piccadilly Theatre in London, before being made into to a hugely successful film starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters in 1980.

Larry Lamb stars as lecturer Frank Bryant, with Laura Dos Santos playing Rita. Lamb is best known for roles in Gavin and Stacey and Eastenders, with an extensive line of work with RSC, National Theatre in London, Royal Court and on the West End. Dos Santos recently appeared in Stags and Hens, also by Russell.

Shirley Valentine stars Meera Syal as Meet Shirley, an uninspired Liverpudlian housewife who accompanies her best friend on an expenses-paid holiday to Greece, where she starts to see herself and the world in a new light.

The Duchess of Malfi is a dark tragedy with themes of love, betrayal, incest, deceit and corruption. When the recently widowed Duchess falls for lowly steward Antonio, her brothers forbid the marriage not wishing to part with their share of the inheritance. Nevertheless they do marry, and have seven children together. The Duchess’ brother, who has an unhealthily incestuous obsession with his sister, disowns her, whereby she and Antonio attempt to flee, taking their wealth with them. Antonio escapes but the Duchess is caught, and the court falls into a black web of death, greed and corruption as the men fight to win their fathers fortune.

Punchdrunk have produced a long line of critically acclaimed experimental London theatre, including Faust and The Mask of The Red Death. Artistic Director Felix Barrett will come together with ENO conductor Stephen Higgins in the company’s first foray into opera. The production is commissioned by English National Opera composer Torsten Rasch as part of the CREATE 10 festival.

True to Punchdrunk form the piece will be a promenade style production where the audience wander through the theatrical space, experiencing opera through the moving performance of seventeen cast members.

The Royal Opera House

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Cinderella comes to The Royal Opera House theatre in London in a new full length version choreographed by Frederick Ashton. The show runs until 5th June, and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Sergey Provokiev is the writer behind this beautifully vivid and evocative orchestral score. The wonderful characters bring life and colour to an age old fairytale in London theatre that portrays themes of fantasy, poverty and true love.

Cinderella is a downtrodden slave to her manipulative and unforgiving step mother, and bullied relentlessly by her ugly step sisters. When a fairy Godmother appears to grant her deepest wish to attend the Prince’s ball, her world comes to life as the surroundings of her sorry existence become the gateway to a better life. When she meets Prince Charming at the ball his heart is won, but all that remains of her after midnight is a mysterious glass slipper. Can the Prince find his one true love, despite the efforts of the ugly sisters to foil him at every turn?

In a world where pumpkins turn into coaches and rags become ball gowns, a happy ending is on the horizon.

The cast of Cinderella includes Alina Cojocaru, Miyako Yoshida, Yuhui Choe, Marianela Nunez, Sarah Lamb, Roberta Marquez, Tamara Rojo, Sergei Polunin, Rupert Pennefather, Steven McRae, Ivan Putrov, Thiago Soares and David Makhateli.

Lighting design is by Mark Jonathan, with costume design from Christine Haworth.
