Sister Act

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Sister Act has announced its closure at the London Palladium for January 2011. In the meantime, former singer from boy band Blue Simon Webbe joins the cast, playing Deloris Van Cartier’s bad-boy lover Curtis Shank.

Theatre tickets are available for the show, which is brought to us by Hairspray producers Stage Entertainment and directed by Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg.

Sister Act is a musical adaptation of the hit 1992 film, starring Goldberg in the lead role. Patina Miller stars as Deloris, with Sheila Hancock in the role of Mother Superior – played in the film version by Maggie Smith. Hancock has recently extended her contract by three months, for which Goldberg has said: “We’re so thrilled that the fabulous Sheila Hancock will continue to trade her judge’s robes for a nun’s habit for another three months. She is truly a force of nature and we’re so grateful to have her in our production of Sister Act. And, what can I say about the delicious and talented Simon Webbe, except that we are honoured to welcome him to the family.”

Simon Webbe has enjoyed a lucrative solo career since the split of Blue, releasing two solo albums with a third to follow. His television appearances include I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, with film roles in Rolling With The Nines and The Truth About Love. Sister Act will mark his debut on the West End, for which he has said to be “honoured”.

Inspector Morse

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A new play by Alma Cullen will resurrect the legendary TV character Inspector Morse – this time to the stage. The play will run from the 6th to the 11th of September at the Richmond Theatre following a national tour. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Actor John Thaw played Inspector Morse on screen for 13 years before his sad death eight years ago. He was widely renowned for the role, which is now to be revived by actor Colin Baker (Doctor Who) for its first time presentation on the stage.

Alma Cullen, the writer behind House of Ghosts, also wrote four Morse episodes during its television run. The original show and now stage play is inspired by the best-selling novels by Colin Dexter. House of Ghosts will premiere at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage this August prior to touring, where it will end its run at the Richmond Theatre in September.

House of Ghosts centres on the inscrutable character of Inspector Morse as he investigates a murder case, where the lead suspect turns out to be a face from the past. Baker heads up a cast of 15 actors in the show, which is directed by Robert Hurford. Calibre productions, who have recently produced stage versions of Dad’s Army, ‘Allo ‘Allo and Porridge are behind this next television-to-stage revival.
