Theatre Royal Haymarket

Following critical acclaim and a sell-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Sweet Charity starring Tamsin Outhwaite has transferred to the West Ends Theatre Royal Haymarket. Theatre tickets for the show are currently on sale.

Sweet Charity is a musical by Cy Coleman, which originally opened at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in 1966, choreographed and directed by Bob Fosse. The show starred Gwen Verdon in the leading role, alongside cast members Helen Gallagher, James Luisi, John McMartin, Thelma Olive, Sharon Ritchie and Arnold Soboloff, where it ran for 608 performances.

The story centres on Charity Hope Valentine, a New York Dance Hostess desperate for success in her career and her love life. However she only seems to attract disaster and her affair with an Italian movie star is closely followed by a liaison with the charismatic Oscar Lindquist, who shortly proposes. However the path to love is not quite straightforward. The score features renowned numbers including “Rhythm of Life”, “Hey Big Spender” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now”.

Joining Outhwaite in the cast are Jayde Westaby, Jez Unwin, Mark Umbers, Carl Sanderson, Annalisa Rossi, Richard Roe, Zak Nemorin, Ebony Molina, Paul J Medford, Gemma Maclean, Richard Jones, Tiffany Graves, Josefina Gabrielle, Jack Edwards and Rachael Archer

The show is directed by Matthew White with choreography from Stephen Mear, set design by Tim Shorthall and costumes by Matthew Wright.

Legally Blonde

Legally Blonde continues to sell-out at the West Ends Savoy Theatre, starring Sheridan Smith in the lead role and ex-Blue singer Duncan James. Theatre tickets sales are flourishing, and are available to buy now.

Legally Blonde began on Broadway, and is based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown. In 2001 it was made into a film starring Reese Witherspoon, before being adapted for the stage by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe, who wrote the music and lyrics, with book by Heather Hach. Legally Blonde moved to the Palace Theatre on Broadway in April 2007, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, with Laura Belle Bundy playing lead role Elle Woods. The show opened in London in December and has enjoyed continuing success since.

Legally Blonde is the story of Elle Woods, a homecoming queen and college sweetheart who will not be defeated. After she is dumped by her boyfriend for a ‘smarter’ model, she sets her sights, mind and credit card towards Harvard Law. During her journey she teaches a lot of people about the beauty of being true to yourself.

Alongside Smith and James in the cast are Jill Halfpenny, Alex Gaumond, Caroline Keiff, Aoife Mulholland, Peter Davison, Susan McFadden, Ibinabo Jack and Amy Lennox.

The Oval House Theatre

The Oval House Theatre is one of the most renowned fringe theatres in South London, and continues to take a pioneering approach to the arts. The Oval House supports new writing and talent, amongst which is Mamba Productions Bend It Like Beauty from the 25 may to 12 June. Theatre tickets are currently on sale.

Ben Voss is the writer and performer, playing a hybrid of Dame Edna Everage and Lily Savage with a hint of Rory Bremner – Beauty Ramapelepele. Beauty is the face of New South Africa. Rich, Black Business woman of the year complete with Botox and high opinions.

The character Voss unleashes is a connoisseur in the underground world of South African Politics, with a drug-running father who met his fate during the 1960 Sharpville massacre and a husband who is a construction mogul, working on the new soccer stadium for King Senzangakhona. Add in a sister with a husband leading the Reserve Bank and a friendship in the shape of Zanele Mbheki, and beauty is an expert on the underhand goings on of South Africa.

Bend It Like Beauty follows the acclaimed Mother Son at the Oval House, “A powerful portrait of homosexuality and family” which tells the transition of a mother struggling to accept her sons sexuality through to becoming the over eager leader of the pride parade.

Ruined

The Almeida, renowned for the production of innovative, cultural drama, is currently staging the Pulitzer Prize winning play Ruined by Lynn Nottage. The show has received critical acclaim for its UK premiere, and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Ruined is set in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Mama Nadi has a bar in a small mining town, and only her rules apply. No politics, no arguments and no guns. However when two young girls arrive they carry with them shame and dishonour, and Mama’s personal loyalties and business priorities are put to the test, as she can no longer hold at bay the atrocities and government militia in the reality of civil war.

Lynn Nottage’s previous works include Fabulation, shown at the Tricycle Theatre in 2006, and Intimate Apparel.

The Goodman Theatre Chicago originally commissioned Ruined before its premiere in February 2009 at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Besides winning the Pulitzer Prize, Ruined also received the New York Critics Circle Award for Best Play, plus four OBIE Awards and two Drama Desk Awards.

Jenny Jules leads a cast comprising of David Ajale, Amole Adele, Michelle Asante, Kehinde Fadipe, Okezie Morro, Silas Carson, Wunmi Mmosaku, Joel Kangudi and Steve Toussaint.

Ruined runs at the Almeida until 5 June, and will be followed by Through A Glass Darkly starring Ruth Wilson.
