The Royal Court – Jerwood Theatre Upstairs
The Royal Courts smaller venue, the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, will be premiering two new plays by graduates of the venue’s Young Writers’ programme. Newcomers Nick Payne and EV Crowe will make their court debuts from September this year. Theatre tickets are on sale now.
First to premiere is Wanderlust by Nick Payne, which will run in the upstairs venue from 9th September to 9th December. Wanderlust explores the relationship between sex and intimacy, and whether they can exist together. Simon Godwin, associate of Bristol Old Vic, will direct.
EV Crowe’s Kin is billed as an “intricate and anarchic view of what really goes on when ten-year-olds are away from home”, and will run from 19th November to 23rd December. Kin is directed by deputy artistic director of the Royal Court Jeremy Herrin.
Also premiering in the Theatre Upstairs is Red Bud by Brett Neveu. Jo McInnes will direct this new play, which will be the first by Chicago-based Neveu to receive a major UK outing. Red Bud is about the “creeping spread of middle age” as friendships fade.
The Royal Court has also offered a glimpse of the 2011 programme, which will include the premiere if the new Simon Stephens play Wastewater, directed by Katie Mitchell. The play is divided into three parts, which will be shown to audiences during one night but in differing orders.
