The Railway Children

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The well-loved tale The Railway Children by E. Nesbit is brought to London by York Theatre Royal in an event that will transform Waterloo’s disused Eurotunnel terminal into a theatrical space. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

The audience will be placed under glass arches on Platform 24, on either side of the railway track, where the Stirling Single locomotive will stand at the centre of the site-specific show. The former Eurotunnel terminal will be transformed into exhibitions, bars and cafes in honour of the performance, which supports the Railway Children Charity for homeless children.

Marshall Lancaster, playing station master Mr Perks, has said that “the audience sit on high platforms as if they’re waiting for trains. They get the whole Victorian experience. They get their tickets stamped when they come in, there’s luggage everywhere. They should expect a high-paced, full Victorian experience. The way they’re building the set, they’ve got real trains coming in, it’s really quite something.”

Lancaster went on to say that “we are always upstaged by the steam trains, so we don’t worry about it! It is amazing; people just look forward to it arriving. There’s a steam effect and sound. Obviously it can’t be blazing or we’d all be on fire in the theatre. To think that the girl who plays Bobby – Sarah Quintrell – she’s got to stand in front of it and wave a petticoat as it stops! Very exciting.”

The Railway Children runs from July until September.

The Country Girl is a Play

Show Overview

‘The Country Girl’ is a play adapted from an original play by Clifford Odets which won an oscar for Grace Kelly back in 1954.

It tells the tragic story of Frank Elgin, a washed up, alcoholic actor who is no longer in demand and with only his wife believing in him; and then it seems his luck is about to change. At an audition, Elgin manages to impress Bernie Dodd, the Director, who wants to give him a chance, so despite opposition from Cook, the show’s producer, Elgin finds himself in with an opportunity to rekindle his career.

As rehearsals begin, Dodd assumes Elgin’s wife Georgie is responsible for him going off the rails. He doesn’t hide his contempt and talks about her behind her back and is rude to her face. What he doesn’t know is that Elgin has never recovered since the death of his five year son whilst in his care and Dodd could never know that Elgin is a a foul mouthed and demanding husband who has made his wife’s life a misery.

Once Dodd learns the truth, he realises that he has been harbouring strong feelings of affection for Georgie and after kissing her, he falls in love.

On opening night, Elgin is a success and his sudden elevation to star again leaves Dodd hopeful that Georgie can leave him without guilt, but instead she chooses to stay with her husband.

‘The Country Girl’ is a wonderful, warm play and its’ stars, Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove will undoubtedly do justice to Odets’ punchy dialogue and painful exploration of alcoholism.

The Menier Chocolate Factory

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The Menier Chocolate Factory is one of the most successful off West End theatres in London, with shows continuing to transfer to the West End following sell out productions and outstanding reviews. The latest musical to grace the Chocolate factory stage is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, directed by Trevor Nunn. The show opens for previews on 7th July and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Michael Arden and Katherine Kingsley were previously announced in the leading roles of Alex Dillingham and Rose Vibert. The pair will now be joined by Rosalie Craig (Giuletta), Dave Willetts (George), Martin Ellis (Marcel) and Rebecca Brewer (Jenny). Also appearing are Louise Lydell, Jill Armour, Ian McLarnon, Savannah Stevenson, David Roberts, Rebecca Trehearne and Dominic Tighe.

Set against a backdrop 1940s France and Italy, young student Alex Dillingham embarks on a passionate love affair with Rose Vibert, an alluring actress. Over three generations, six people brought together learn that love changes everything.

David Willets has recently been seen playing Max in Sunset Boulevard on the West End. Rosalie Craig performed at the Jermyn Street Theatre in Anyone Can Whistle.

Whatsonstage.com award winner Martin Ellis was noted for his performance as Nicely Nicely in Guys And Dolls, directed by Michael Grandage.

This is the first revival of aspects of Love since 1989, when it premiered at the Prince of Wale’s Theatre in the West end – also directed by Nunn.

Yes Prime Minister is a Play/comedy

Show Overview

‘Yes Prime Minister’ has been written by the same people who bought us the hugely successful TV series.

Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn are celebrating 30 years of what was originally ‘Yes Minister’ by adapting the TV smash to the stage. The same wonderfully funny dialogue and situations will be the same but the stars of course will have changed.

Staring as PM Jim Hacker is the superb David Haig who has numerous screen and stage credits to his name including ‘Thin Blue Line’, ‘My Boy Jack’ and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’. Haig is also a winner of the coveted Laurence Olivier Award for acting. Alongside him is Henry Goodman as Cabinet Secretary, Sir Humphry Appleby who also has a string of stage credits to his name and has won the Laurence Oliver Award twice.

Based on the coalition government, ‘Yes Prime Minister’ is about the two men facing a country in meltdown and with only one option open to them; creating a rather dubious alliance with some questionable allies.

The situation is deliciously ripe for some comedic genius and Jay and Lynn have created a stage show that is likely to be a huge success and absolutely hilarious for those lucky enough to get tickets before its’ short run finishes in January next year.

Don’t miss out on this production.
