Written in 1938, The Children’s Hour first staged at Maxine Elliott’s Theatre on Broadway. Controversial for it’s time, the play was banned in the US and UK, but having had wide praise from the critics, it went on to be an incredible success and was subsequently adapted into a film.
Starring Keira Knightley in the role Karen Wright and Elisabeth Moss as Martha Dobie, The Childrens Hour is set in a 1930′s New England all girls boarding school. Accused of having a lesbian affair by an angry run-away student, the two women who have worked extremely hard all their lives to build the school in a refurbished farmhouse become entangled in a devastating story of shame, courage and deceit.
Over 80 years since it’s creation, this potent exploration of fear and culture remains incredibly relevant in the 21st Century as it was in generations gone by.
