There is a wide variety of theatre on offer in London. During the summer months you can see Shakespeare’s plays performed at Shakespeare’s Globe which is a theatre built as a replica of the theatre of the same name at which many of the Elizabethan playwright’s works were first performed all those years ago. It is also the venue each year for a number of new works which require large casts and an epic staging.
One of these shows this year is ‘A New World – A Life of Thomas Paine’ written by Trevor Griffiths’. It will run from the 3rd of September until the 9th of October 2009. It will be directed by the Globe’s artistic director, Dominic Dromgoole.
John Light plays the title role and has previously played Brutus in ‘Julius Caesar’ and Caliban in ‘The Tempest’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His television credits include ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Holding On’.
He is joined by Philip Bird who has been appearing regularly at the Globe since 1998 when he played the title role in the rarely performed ‘King John’. He is also appearing in ‘As You Like It’ this summer. Jamie Parker is also in the cast. He is perhaps best known for playing Scripps in the National Theatre’s production of ‘The History Boys’.
