As You Like It
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010‘As You Like It’ is one of Shakespeare’s most enduring and often performed comedies. It is a particularly popular choice for open air performances. This is not surprising as it mixes many of the best features of the fairy tale with the courtly comedy. The ingredients for a great night at the theatre are all there. An evil brother who is redeemed, a comic philosopher, a girl cross dressing and falling in love with a man who believes she is a boy. Throw in some comedy country folk and it’s the perfect escape from everyday life.
The Old Vic will be staging this play from 12 June to 21 August. Theatre tickets for all performances are on sale now although not all dates are available as the play is in repertory with ‘The Tempest’.
Stephen Dillane plays Jaques and has to deliver one of Shakespeare’s best known, and most often quoted, speeches concerning the seven ages of man. It may not be quite as well known as “To be or not to be….”, but it is surely not far behind. In any case, it is in safe hands. Dillane’s previous stage work includes playing the titles roles in ‘Macbeth’ for the Almeida Theatre in London and Chekov’s ‘Uncle Vanya’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
